OUR LIFE IN 3D

The Home of Daddy's Day Dare! ~ I am just trying to stay above water

Catching up

And now for something completely different.

Godzilla terrorizing downtown this week:

“We saw a dinosaur walking down the street,” Gary Shelby said.

“A person dressed as a Tyrannosaurus rex (Godzilla, right?) startled a pair of carriage horses in downtown Charleston on Thursday, injuring one of the horses and the driver.

Shelby Salvador and her husband, Gary, watched the scene unfold from their corner table at Tommy Condon’s Restaurant.

When the carriage got to 160 Church St., the dinosaur stopped and began making growling noises at the horses. This spooked the horses and they began backing up. The carriage then struck an unoccupied vehicle and caused minor damage to its bumper.”

The driver lost his balance and was thrown from the carriage during the incident, he said. One of the carriage’s wheels rolled over one of the driver’s legs.

Gary said he decided to confront the costumed carnivore and noticed that the person underneath was a female.

According to Phil Bailey, a public relations representative retained by Palmetto Carriage Works, the carriage was nearing the end of its tour route and the driver shouted at the T-Rex, warning that its antics would scare the horses. But the theropod’s alleged snarling spooked the horses, causing them to back up and jackknife the carriage, Bailey said. One horse, named Yogi, fell, and the driver was thrown out of the carriage. The other horse, Boo Boo, was not injured. Source: Post and Courier

And that may have been the most blog worthy activity around these parts since our ill-fated Disney Cruise.

With apologies, I and we have been busy. My new job is a real challenge and the girls are getting busier and busier. But the words that fly out of their mouth these days are not nearly as cute as they were 4 years ago.

Still, a lot has happened. For instance, we all got a year older over the last 3 months. Its been a birthday parade, one after another about every two weeks. It has been confirmed, I am now old as dirt.

But, instead of giving you a lengthy play-by-play after the news clip above, let me ‘catch you up’ in pictures over the last 3 months.

Dylan had her birthday in March, It was her turn to have a party this year

She wanted a skating party at the local ice rink again.

She’s getting bigger!

Do you remember her when….

When this was as old as I wanted her to look..

Some of us think it is ‘scary’ how big she is getting!

Gosh, this 3rd grader invited more boys than girls!

Skylar’s birthday was next. She is turning 7.

And while her birthday was not as extravagant this year Aunt Sue and Grandma made up for it on their visit for Easter.

Getting Bigger too!

Yes Easter… and the girls got spoiled all over again. Like ‘multiple’ Easter Baskets?

Skylar also earned ‘Student of the Month’ in April

Look at her, “I’m so cool’!

While Dylan won a bike at a Science night that same week.

Dylan also earned a Daddy Date Night after her excellent report card and blowing away her reading goals.

She chose a place where they have a chocolate fountain.

We even caught a movie or two.

This one really rocked. It was a good, funny, ‘family‘ movie; after you got past all the bad language

Then it turned May and it was Mommy’s birthday and just recently Daddy’s birthday. But Dylan could only think of one thing:

How soon would the pool be open?

Has it been 30 minutes yet?

And it has been for about a month now.

I have been working hard on putting in more tropical landscaping, trying to make this a tropical escape.

A place where the kids can play without looking elsewhere.

To do something nice for them that neither Mom nor I had growing up.

Where every Saturday or Sunday it feels like a vacation around 4 or 5 o’clock.

Washed in the ocean; dried in the sun

So that more and more Saturdays can look like this for Mom and Dad.

Life in the fast lane

And that is it from the Spring. Consider yourself Caught Up!

We are now getting ready for summer and sadly this self-proclaimed beach bum may not see the beach any time soon as the pool gets warmer and warmer and a heck of a lot closer.

Have a great week knuckleheads!

I’ll try to do better this summer!

We Don’t Celebrate Valentine’s At Our House, part IV

Well it is true after all, we do not celebrate Valentine’s at our house. This year, in an effort to go some place warm(er), we decided to try our first cruise over Valentine’s Day. It was a Disney Cruise leaving out of Port Canaveral, FL.

Now, we have never gone on a cruise, for various reasons, preferences really. So we were excited to get away, do some exploring and be catered to by the good folks at Disney.

We cruised on the newly refurbished Disney Dream. This was a huge ship! And, as the Cruise Director pointed out, the Lexus sitting in the cruise destinations in a dock full Fords. It really was a big, bright, impressive looking ship. To give you an idea, the ship boasted of over 4000 passengers and a crew of over 1500 below.

Inside of our state room

Our room slept 4 fairly comfortably. In the picture above, see the rectangle in the ceiling on the right side; touching the blue and white drape? That was a bed that mysteriously dropped out of nowhere while we were at dinner. Seriously, we couldn’t figure out how to lower it.

The ship did not have all the rides of a Disney World but it did have a pretty fun water roller coaster..the AquaDuck..

This ride looked so intriguing that we actually booked our board time as early as possible just so we could ride it as often as possible before the other shipmates boarded on arrival day. The water may have been cold but it was fun!

aqua-duck

Because this idea was based loosely around a 4 Day weekend from school for our girls we only booked the 3 night journey. Our destinations included the Bahamas and then over to Disney’s very own island,  Castaway Cay.

A month ago we booked a catamaran sailboat excursion to go out snorkeling at the Bahamas but when we got there both the air and water temperature were too cold to go swimming and sailing in a big Cat. I knew the children would be miserable in the cold breeze. Too bad for us, we still had to pay the $200 reservations anyway.

The next day at Castaway Cay was a bit warmer so we did go ashore there. Castaway Cay was a neat little island. A Disney amusement site in its own right. There is lots of fun to be had there..

UNLESS……. it gets a little breezy (who ever heard of an island without a wee bit of a coastal breeze?) Well the coastal breeze that day negated any and all water sports.. sailing, banana boats (our reservation), jet ski’s, you name it. All cancelled. After living on the coast it makes me wonder how often these ‘attractions’ are actually open? When is it not breezy on the coast?

Breakfast as we dock at Castaway Cay

For months I had been looking forward to doing some snorkeling there too. Well, too bad for me, about lunchtime the powers-that-be decided it was a bit too choppy to go snorkeling (with a life vest) too. Liability you know. The 20 lifeguards there must not have been enough of a safe guard.

The Disney Dream ship itself had plenty to offer the kids though. They never left the ship when we docked at the Bahamas and Dylan was quick to return there on our day at Castaway Cay.

There were plenty of fun things including the Candy Shop that was actually a fancy ice cream parlor.

dream-ice-cream-car

And, of course, the Disney Brand, all the Disney Princesses as well as Mickey and the gang were on hand.

disney-princess-meet-and-greet

Skylar wasn’t as into the Disney princesses this trip (all she wanted to do was hang out in the pool) but Dylan did meet them all and gather a few more of their autographs too.

my southern belle

But it was the Caribbean after all and you knew, eventually you would see some Piracy!

pirate-night

And it was Disney itself this time!

And it came in the form of their ship photographers.

When we visited Disney World we always opted for the photograph option there where all the Disney photographers (located everywhere) take your picture and then you simply download the ones you want for a fee paid upfront.

On the Disney Dream they have some photographers too but the photo packages were quite different.

They assembled all your photos that they took, in various shapes and sizes, in hard copies the last day there. Then you could either buy a pricey photo package or photos a la carte.

Well I have YOU to post pictures for as well as send lots of pics of our kids to family and friends. So I asked if I could get the photos on a USB drive or something digital.

And…..for $149….. for 10 pictures (!!!) they said I could

If I wanted 15 pictures the price went to $199. Ouch!

But what are you going to do when you want to take some memories like this home?

Disney Gold

Disney Gold Doubloons!

and this

They drove a hard bargain matey. I barely left with the shirt on me back!

Otherwise, we saw three shows and they all were really good. Like the magical showBelieve

as well as the on the pool deck presentation of Mickey’s Pirates of the Caribbean

...where all the photographers put on a costume and a show.

The cuisine was up to Disney standards but also held up to cruise food reputations.

We both got food poisoning on separate days. One of us got it so violently ill Saturday night that we had to call housekeeping at 4:30am to come clean up our bathroom.

Which raised another point of contention.

First its a ship. Right? Some people are going to get sea sick. It’s also a cruise ship which I understand, have reputations for serving food outside of normal food handling guidelines, given the mass production.Food poisoning is not unheard of people tell me.

Second, if people are going to get sick why do they only carry nothing more than Pepto Bismol!

It lasts one hour!

The cruise medical staff said they could hand out as much Pepto Bismol to us as we wanted but for anything else we would need to visit the ship doctor.

Which was quickly followed up with a statement, “and probably quarantined.”

Can I say WTF here?

Its true. I heard this at least twice.

Not only do they not carry a travel staple like Imodium on board but the doctors play Nazi’s when it comes to you telling someone you are sick.

Sorry. I was just amazed at how the medical staff were so, ahhh, unDisney.

Overall, I believe our girls had a really great time. Dylan explored and met some more of her favorite Princesses while Skylar sat in the pool and watched Disney movies on the mega screen above the pool deck.

As for me, that is the last cruise I will ever go on. I saw this as one of the single largest wastes of money in my life, from a value standpoint. Too many rules, too many people, and lines, too many deadlines, too many precautions.

When I go on vacation I just want to be able to put my feet in the sand and relax; without wondering how soon everyone needs to be back on the ship.

As for Disney World vs. a Disney Cruise vacation, this is a no-brainer.

Disney World has it down to a science in hospitality and new levels of vacationing standards that others can only aspire to. Yes, I am a big fan! And, on a similar night package, Disney World is probably cheaper than a Disney Cruise too. (Don’t get me started on the mandatory $12 per person per day ‘Gratuity‘ fee!)

I am sorry this vacation post is not more upbeat like I normally try to do. My appetite is not the only thing I haven’t got back yet it appears.

I will do better next time knuckleheads.

Have a great weekend…

Game time! ~ 5 Grandmas for Christmas

I woke up normal this morning. Same time. Normal time, thinking about my gym time.

Then it hit me

This is it!

Game time!

We spend so much time planning, and decorating and preparing our hearts each December and I realized this morning….THIS IS IT!

THIS IS THE DAY!

Well, one of them.

Time to make some memories for our young (and old)

LOL so I changed my focus for the day, put on my Santa hat and opened my mind to ‘experiencing’ this year’s Christmas holiday.

Yep, we are all ready!

“…in hopes that St. Nicolas soon would be here.”

My elf is ready!

Elf Lana pretending she's a snowman

Even our greyhound got in the spirit of things this morning!

Blitzen came by for an early Christmas visit

And, if your house looks like ours this Christmas, you have a lot of this…

and visions of sugar and homemade Baklava and chocolate covered popcorn danced in their heads.”

And, for me, nothing spells ‘celebration’ like..

yes, Christmas is a time of celebration

yes, Christmas is a time of celebration

If you have been following this blog for a while you know each Christmas starts early for our girls.

That’s right. The week before Christmas boxes and boxes and cards and gifts come in from our girl’s many special Grandmothers, each with their own very special version of ‘Love’ for their adopted granddaughters.

img_20161214_181145248

The more love the better!

Yes, our girls are blessed with about 5 very special sets of grandparents. And the love and generosity they show these girls is touching.

This year that received everything from sweets, high-tech gadgets, clothes, money, toys, gift cards and even a Movie Night or two in the mail.

Amazing!

So we wanted to send each of our adopted family a Christmas card and a glimpse of some of the smiles and kid quotes that happened when opening these great gifts. And one very special version of ‘the spirit of Christmas’.

Thank YOU so very much ladies!

We love you all so much!

And as you can see everything was a big hit with the girls.

OK, I have dilly-dallied long enough. Its 11am and I am being called out to the living room. It seems Grandma #5 is taking her turn at spoiling spreading some Christmas cheer for our girls.

Game time...

Game time…

I hope your holiday is filled with lots and lots of happy smiles.

Time to be a kid again.

And remember the reason for the season.

Merry Christmas everyone!

Ghosts of Christmas Past

So, what’s new this week?

Anything going on with you?

Well! We have a new guest in the house this week. And her name starts with ‘Elf’ and rhymes with Shelf.

Does anyone else think this reminds you of Cher if she were an Elf; and a new way to ride the train?

Does anyone else think this reminds you of Cher if she were an Elf; and a new way to ride the train?

Everyone, meet ‘Lana’, our new Elf (ette) on the Shelf.

She decided to ride the train last night while we were sleeping and stopped to listen to the church carolers (picture ‘A Night At The Museum‘)

Sadly, later this evening we saw her propped up on Kingsford’s Brew House trying to scare away the Two Turtle Doves. (Hussy)

Apparently you can buy rent these little Santa’s delinquents helpers at Target still. Hmmm?

Well she’s helping us keep watch over the girls the remainder of this week.. at least when she’s not getting into trouble.

You see the first night she was here she apparently ate three of the girl’s lollipops and some candy; and left the trash all over the floor.

Last night, of course, she propped her feet up and rode the train.

Tonight I saw her over by a holiday candle roasting some mini-marshmallows.

Are these Elves really legit?

Guess what?

If you haven’t noticed, school’s out this week. Our oldest had a sleepover with a girl from our church after a birthday party at the local skating rink.

A train wreck waiting to happen

A train wreck waiting to happen

These two are practically the same age. Only two months separate them. We have been good friends with her parents even before they were born. So its good to see them getting along and having fun so well.

img_20161218_144512657

Do you think that they know I have a blog and are now weary every time I whip out the camera at a shindig?

Do you think they had any fun skating together?

If you look closely you can see Dylan sporting a new grill

(that’s the right slang, right? I heard it watching professional football)

That is right, Dylan is working her way through the ‘braces years’. She has been wearing an ‘appliance’ to widen her jaw and draw back her front teeth and now, last week, she had her first front braces put on.

In the spirit of Christmas she opted for Red and Green braces to celebrate the season.

Can you pick them out?

img_20161220_183653166

Yes, she seems to love them, doesn’t she?

You know you can’t talk to a parent with pictures of their kids without the phrase “they grow up so fast” popping out. And the last few days, after some of my Christmas posts, links have led to prior year’s Christmas posts when I stumbled across one of my favorite little videos from the past.

Ladies and gentlemen, you see the 8yr old-almost-a-teenager above. Here is a blast from the past at this girl’s very first Christmas.

Many thanks to youtube and our original nanny Jessica for preserving this great moment in our family.

The first thing that struck me when I watched this video was the love for our first child, really a miracle of sorts, but like most every one’s first child I suppose. Lots of love and no shortage of attention and presents.

The second thing that struck me was the love and playfulness of my father, her grandfather in this video. You see he is in a home now, struck down with a type of Dementia. He is not going to make the trip this year to see his granddaughters for Christmas, nor ever again. So what a treat it is for me to see these fun candid pictures with his granddaughter. Pictures that capture him and his loving, playful personality; the way we always should remember him.

So really, thank you, from all of us to remember him in these candid shots. A pleasant visit from the ghosts of Christmas past.

I also stumbled across our second child’s first video; one in which she has nothing to say. …cause she can’t talk yet. She is flimsy and quiet and cute and innocent and I can’t remember that far back. (apparently it runs in the family)

Here is Skylar’s first Christmas

Another Ghost of Christmas past.

Merry Christmas Week everyone!

Dear God, thank you for the birth of Your son. Let us keep Him front and center as we celebrate this holy Holiday week. And dear Father, thank You for our families that we all may see again over the coming days.  May we all play nicely and keep these very special moments sacred in our hearts and souls. Because things change. Father, thank You for creating all the things; family, traditions, celebrations, memories, and great tidings of joy that we deem special and holy this week. You are the Master of creation and Your acts are better than our dreams. Thank You for Your love ~ Amen

Christmas Light Park

I  mentioned a festive week. How about a Festival of Lights?

With family in town and the great outdoors begging us to get outside for some Christmas cheer, last night we decided to take the kids to our James Island County Park ‘Festival of Lights‘ show.
201315

This is our local version of the drive through light show. It is something the kids look forward to every year. For some reason they were looking forward to toasting marshmallows more than ever before.

20137This year we did the drive through as well. but, with the kids yearning for some s’mors we quickly parked the car and headed for the fires and some marshmallow toasting.

FireWe did. We melted. Our lips and fingers got awfully sticky.  So we set off to see what else we could see.

You know what? I think this Christmas light park is really for kids….

20134So we rode the carousel a time or two. We found the customary Hot chocolate and laid plans to see what else we could conquer….

hot chocolateIt was a comfortably cool night and so we decided to do something we had never attempted before…the walking path light show….

walk this wayThe bright and colorful lights were inviting. The night was young. We had our hot chocolate…and our cell phones cameras and so off we went in search of more adventure!

We found a gingerbread house we could get in….

We even found a dolphin among the land-locked light show…

We found some wonderfully lit trees…

201317and then we found a light display that actually talked to us. Take a listen….

…just in case you have not heard Mannheim Steamroller enough this month.

the display really caught your attention as you walked on by.

Our trail took us to a fifty ton pile of sand that was cleverly sculpted into…

..Santa’s Castle. The kids seemed to enjoy the glorified sand castle a little…

As the path led back towards the start we came upon a giant Christmas Card display or contest from area school students. I have to admit….they are better than me at this….

Middle school

and a take off on our area’s Shrimp and Grits….

and another that offers ‘Season’s Greetings from our shores to yours’

All in all it was a nice night out. The walking path light show is one we have not done before so that made the whole night a bit more interesting this time too.

And MOST importantly, the kids seemed to really like the lights too, despite our repeated “No’s” to “Carry me, Carry me!

Hallelujah!

….its a Griswold Christmas!

Happy Holidays Everyone!
