DYLANism ~ please don’t candy-coat it

Remember several years ago when the cute little  words of wisdom used to roll off my oldest daughter’s mouth, which I tried to coin, “DYLANisms“?

Well this old blog has slowed down, partly because these cute little innocent lines just don’t roll off her tongue so much any more.. And I have missed them.

Or have I?

Last Thursday, through a few scheduling snafu’s Dylan ended up having to ride with me to get my haircut. Well she had been talking about getting a summer cut too so I thought why not let her get first salon experience also? Kinda like an impromptu Daddy Date.

And she did, she got the full treatment. Even a professional lesson on washing and drying her hair

…as well as how not to dry your hair.

She’s getting older!

Anyway, every time I sit down to get my haircut I always jokingly tell my stylist I would like her to cut it in a way that makes me look younger…and maybe a bit more professional.

Well this girl is good but not that good!

So when she was done I turned to Dylan and asked her, “What do you think?”

You see every-time I come home from getting my haircut as soon as I walk in the door the first thing out of her mouth is, “Daddy, I like your haircut!

So I asked her half-heartedly, “Do you think I look any younger?” expecting some sort of nice complimentary reply.

She shook her head no.

Disillusioned I said, “No? Why not? What more does she need to do to help me look younger?

Dylan innocently looks up at me, “Your face!”

Thank you! Thank you!

My stylist and I both looked at each other and burst out laughing.

You don’t have a sander, do you?” I asked.

I think next time she can find her own stylist.

That’s all for now. Have the best summer weekend knuckleheads!

I’ll try to do better next time.

Do you think I look any younger?

SKYLARism:

Sunday was a lazy day. It was raining for what seemed like the tenth day in a row.

We came home from church and brunch. The girls had their baths and we put them to bed.

Mom and Dad have been good. I guess they deserve some quiet time.

Mom and Dad have been good. I guess they deserve some quiet time.

With the To-Do lists majorly caught up, Mom and I decided to take a break. We found a movie, among all the quietness, and Mom helped herself to a glass of wine and some slices of cheese to go with our Sunday Matinée.

For ‘medicinal’ purposes

At the end of our brief hiatus from reality Skylar comes down from her nap and sits on Mom’s lap, laying her little head on Mom’s shoulder. After a few minutes a sleepy Skylar sits up and squints her eyes at Mom, barely opening them enough to let the light in and says,

“Mom, you smell like the blood of Jesus”

Mom and I looked at each other and smiled. Maybe Mom communed too much?

Peace be with you Skylar!

How do you know what ‘the blood of Jesus’ smells like anyway?

SKYLARism

This week in Sunday School our kid’s teacher drew a frowny face on the palm of each child’s hand. She explained that the frowny face represented sin.

The kids took a good hard look at it.

sad

She would later go on and wipe off the frowny face on each child’s hand and told the analogy of this is what Jesus did for us by dieing on the cross; He ‘wiped away’ all our sins.

Only Skylar’s frowny face wouldn’t wipe off!

The teacher tried and tried to wipe off the frowny face from Skylar’s hand but it wouldn’t come off. The teacher, feeling sorry for Skylar, apologized to her for making her hand dirty.

Skylar shrugged her shoulders and  conceded,

“Its OK. I’ve been a little mean sometimes.

Wow!

We and Jesus still love ya Skylar!

If it makes you feel any better Skylar, my frowny face doesn’t always wipe off either.

Have a great week everyone!

Turn that frown upside down!

DYLANism: What are you hiding in there?

This morning the girls, Chum and I were in the kitchen fetching some breakfast. Dylan was standing beside me when Chum stuck his cold wet nose on the back of Dylan’s leg to sniff her.

Dylan laughed and said, “Daddy, the dog wants to smell by butt.”

I told her that is how dog’s recognize people sometimes and then rhetorically asked, “Why, whatcha got hiding in there?” as if there was a reason Chum was smelling her toosh.

Dylan shrugged her shoulders, laughed and innocently answered “Just poop and tinkle!”

As much as some things change some things can still stay the same! You have to like her innocence and honesty.

In another note, we had a present when we reached school this morning. This is what was waiting for us as we walked in together.

full rainbow

I know this blog has been getting a bit one sided this week and I want to leave the ‘Back To School’ idea alone.

After all, millions of kids are going back to school this week or month, right?

But this being my first time to experience this,  it just seems that something remarkable happens each day so far.

Maybe its this way for everyone more or less. I dunno.

I hope so!

God has a plan when he puts the end of a rainbow in the direction of school. A different kind of 'pot-of-goid'.

Shake, Shake, Shake Like A Big Wet Dog…

Another weekend has come and is going.  We made it to the beach again despite Andrea’s attempts to keep us in all weekend. Our weekend plans were hastily rekindled as the news of Andrea hit the road and was a quick blur up the coast.

Bye-bye Andrea!

Bye-bye Andrea!

The famous Aunt Sue checked into our B&B on Friday. She comes down with her vacation already planned out. So it was good news to her Andrea didn’t get in her way.  In fact, in typical carpei diem fashion she had our girls in bathing suits before I ever got out of bed on Saturday morning. And so in a blink…and a shower and a breakfast we were off…

It was a nice day again, a bit breezy as the dry backside of Andrea kept pushing her northward. The girls found their favorite tidal pool again, which was fine with dad as I just wanted to make up for the the 0-60 morning they put us through. And after a brief tumble in the waves I grabbed my hat and my shades and tried to become invisible and part of the chair.

I frequently talk about some of the incredible things that come out of Dylan’s mouth, both funny and perceptive in the DYLANism’s.  Skylar, in her own way, is getting her own version of SKYLARism’s too. These are super cute things that come out of her mouth, and more so, the cute way she says them.

I can’t recapture in print the innocent tone of some of these but early SKYLARism‘s include:

  • “Yummy, Yummy, Yummy in my tummy, tummy, tummy which has morphed into her favorite tasting food simply becoming,
  • Deee-wish-ous!. Again, these seem to be her unique ideas and so adorable as the way a happy Skylar says them. But where did she get them from in the first place?

Now, somewhere, somehow, from somebody, she learned to “shake, shake, shake, like a big wet dog” when she gets out of the water to dry off.

Huh? Too cute, but where did this come from?

She reminds me what our past greyhound would do when he got out of laying in the tidal pools

Even though he had a super short coat you didn’t want to be around as he shook off surf and sand together.

But what Skylar does is sooo much cuter than Cloud.

Take a look…..but be ready, she’s fast…

That’s her version of drying off coming out of the surf!

...and then going back in again!

See any similarity?

She's no stranger to sand...

Now before you start sending hate mail to me for me comparing the super cute little Skylar to a greyhound I am not doing that at all.  I would never do that! We love our 2nd miracle child so much and these sayings just add to the adoration, although there are certain parallels.  She is way too precious to be even in the same sentence with an animal.

I’m just saying…..

…and where does she get these things?
