Coincidence?

Funny thing happened on the blog today.

If you are like me, you check your stats regularly.

If you have two kids in your blog and are like me, you check to see what the ‘Clicks‘ are that get clicked on each day.

Today I had a bit of a surprise.

The first Click was on the poem Hug O’ War, from Shel Silverstein’s book Where the Sidewalk Ends’. That poem, along with Snowball, from our  past Bedtime Stories, are popular or common searches that lead people to my blog in 3D.

(take a look to the right and see)

hug or war

Now, want to see a coincidence?

I clicked on the other  ‘Click‘ to see what else someone clicked at….

Moral of the story….

Come to 3D and get you some Hugs!

Ourlifein3D is filled with Hugs.

And so why don’t you give someone you care about a big fat Hug today?

I know there are some people in Virgina tonight that could use some hugs.

Think about VA

‘Hug it’ Forward.

Surprise someone you love.

Its a lot better world when it is filled with Hugs than Tugs

Cause I would rather play at Hug O’ War…

… where everyone cuddles

and everyone wins.

Cannonball

Hi Gang!

Happy Weekend everyone!

Can you believe it? The summer is dwindling down and slipping away..

We were tying up some last family type things before the first week of school.

Last week Mom’s work had another great Family / Employee appreciation day. Her company always does a great job in making a nice outing on a Saturday. So we got all dressed up for the event.

The day was filled with fun; fun video games, fun with waterslides…

a post pool slide

Even fun with a Talent Competition….

We had to cool down with a great Sno Ball, ahh, Sno Cone

a post sno ball

Now when I was a kid peddling sno balls with my friend in our wagon we never gave out straws with the sno balls. Here, Skye just heads right for the syrup with her straw. If we would have handed out straws when I was a kid we could have charged for refills or had a lot more business!

The following Sunday we decided to cool off in the pool with one of our ‘soon to be famous’ Cannonball Competitions!

We had a lot of fun splashing the water out of the pool.

Yes, the pool. It’s been a long hard fight (working with contractors is a nightmare!) to get this pool up and running this summer. But it’s finally ready to use and enjoy.

She's waited a long time for her pool

It looks like the pool is finally coming alive. And this is one of my favorite retreats now at night…

Hiding beneath the water, watching the cascading lights on both the floor of the pool and the ceiling of the water. Swimming peacefully alone at night has been such an escape; refreshing, relaxing and rewarding. If you are looking for me after dark (and the kids go are in bed) you might find me here.

Monday then was the first day of school! Yayyyy!

Dylan was ready……

Poor Skylar had a fever of 104 though and sat out her two first days. But after several trips to the doctors we got her feeling better and with that fun smile on her face.

Happy first day of Kindergarten Skylar!

And YOUR beginning of a great scholastic career too!

Only 16 more years till I can retire…..

Happy Weekend everyone!

Don’t forget to dance and have fun like no one is watching!

Silly Love Songs

Last night I got a great surprise when I got home from work. Unknown to me it became… Daddy Night!

Let me explain.

When Dylan first went to Kindergarten the Kindergarten teacher used a color chart to monitor and manage student’s behavior. You may have seen this before.

Green was a ‘ready to learn’ color. Purple meant you were the best student you could be. Red meant the teacher and mommy and daddy need to have a talk. And there were some other colors mixed in as well.

Everyone started the day on Green and in order to move up you had to do something that was a big help to others, or be courteous, or well-mannered, or just being an exemplary student. Dylan took great pride in this of course and couldn’t wait to tell us the color she was on when we got home from work.

In First Grade the teacher moved the student behavior rainbow up a notch and gave the student a pom-pom everyday they ended the day on Purple. After a student received 5 such pom-poms the student got a special treat or privilege, like eating lunch with the teacher.

So we have taken this well thought out behavior illustration system home and use it to acknowledge good and bad behavior at home. When a child ends the day on Purple they too get a pom-pom at home and after five can ask for anything they want.

My Dylan ALWAYS asks for a Daddy (Date) Night! Daddy Night is when just Dylan and I go out to a restaurant of her choice and / or something else, like her favorite activity, wrestling Daddy!

So back to last night and as I ‘turned the corner on to the block we live on in my car’ Dylan met me waving frantically at the corner and then ran all the way home, waiting for me to park. She was excited to ask me what tonight was?

Me: Ahhhh, hot dogs outside on the patio?

Dylan: No! It’s Daddy Night! I got on Purple again today! I have five pom-poms!

So after I transitioned from work to home we discussed where to go on her (my) special date? It was either the fast food outfit, Cookout, for their milk shakes or Carrabbas for their Johnny Cole dessert. Well Daddy just happened to have a coupon for Carrabbas so off to Johnny Cole land we went.

On the way there, Paul McCartney’s classic came on the radio, ‘Silly Love Songs’. And listening to it and embracing the special dinner I was going on, I looked in the rearview mirror, into the back seat and said, “Dylan? I love you!” She grinned from ear to ear as many of you have seen by now.

At Carrabbas I opened the door for her. I introduced her as my date to the hostess staff and then explained the situation to our server. I had to explain the reason why my date was all smiles!

My little thoughtful dinner date decided to write me a little note on a napkin then.

And the Daddy Night only got better from there!

It was a Daddy Night, again. She wanted to wrestle when we got back but this ball of energy is getting heavier! So I talked her into a sunset swim instead.

She seemed to be alright with that.

Thanks for picking Daddy Night for your choice of prizes Dylan!

We should fill the world with Silly Daddy Nights!

And what’s wrong with that?

I’d like to know….

Sorry 3D gang… I have spent a lot of time on our oldest daughter lately. She has had an amazing summer for sure!

But our youngest cutie has been having a good summer too!

And she is about ready to start her long-awaited scholastic career (school starts in a few weeks) so brace yourself for an onslaught of Skylar and First Day of School stories! She is well prepared! She reads like a 2nd grader already. She must have some good genes!

Have a great weekend everyone! I’ll try to do better next time!

Just another weekend in the life of a Charmed one….

Last Friday, as I was reading a new comment from an old friend, my wife got a text asking if Dylan would like to spend “an overnight trip on a ship” this (past) weekend?

Are you kidding me?

Here it turns out a small group of Girl Scouts from Charlotte, NC had a package plan that they paid for with their Girl Scout cookie money funds and one girl had to cancel at the 11th hour. And it was a pretty sweet deal, especially to fall on the lap of a 7-year-old out of nowhere.

The trip included dinner at CiCi’s pizza Friday night, then an Oceanography class, scavenger hunts, a trip to the local aquarium (to play Shark tag?) followed by a movie in 4D, as well as a Harbor Tour around Charleston’s harbor. All meals were paid for.

Sweet!

A great weekend falling on her lap from completely out of the blue!

But wait! It gets better……

It wasn’t until a few days later that I found out the ‘ship’ Dylan and the Girl Scouts were going to spend the weekend camping on was an AIRCRAFT CARRIER!

the USS Yorktown, Dylan's B&B this weekend.

the USS Yorktown, Dylan’s B&B this weekend.

Can you imagine?

They were staying aboard the USS Yorktown. And, after all the boat tours were finished on this retired giant by the paying tourists they had the place to themselves. This included running amuck all over the flight deck in the evenings and bunk beds 3 and 4 bunks high.

So we lost track of our little ‘Charmed’ one until Saturday afternoon (and some 300 pictures later on the spare phone) when we could accompany her and the small band of Girl Scouts on the Charleston Harbor Tour in the itinerary.

I enjoyed this tour a lot as it gave you views of Chucktown that we rarely get a chance to see unless we are playing tourist. I loved the views as well as the history of some of the forts. I am not sure if the girls got as much out of it as they just chased each other around the boat, whenever they were not looking for dolphins.

Remember this pic from the Charleston Postcard last week?

You can barely make out the two forts I mentioned. Here is a better view of the first fort, Castle Pinkney, built circa 1790. This forgotten fort was once the look out and protection in Charleston’s harbor.

Remember this scene from Pirates of the Caribbean?

a Pirates

Well the Castle Pinkney was once the end to 40 or so pirates’ lives by hanging back in the day. Hung out on an island before entering Charleston as a warning to other pirates ye say?

Our tour boat then chugged us out to Fort Sumter, the Federal fort to protect Charleston in the 1800’s.

I heard lots of good facts about this fort, too many to bore you with list here. The fort has been reconstructed though after its bombardment in the Civil War. One little known fact however was that one of the commanders of Fort Sumter was a Col. Abner Doubleday, who later went on to create our national pastime, Baseball. And a view from the air shows you that Fort Sumter is in the octagon shape of Home Plate in baseball. Hmmmm…

We got to see Charleston from the sea then as well. Remember these houses from Postcard? Yes, that was / is the skyline that greeted travelers approaching Charleston from the sea.

Another interesting sight on our tour was this:

Charleston is third largest port on the US’s east coast; the entering port for lots of international trade. This is a parking lot full of brand new BMW’s. If you scanned the parking lot, they seem to go on indefinitely….

While on the water we saw other types of fun, relaxing traffic illustrating how others spend their weekends. Besides the speed boat traffic in and out of the harbor and up the bordering rivers we saw…

It was a great way to get a glimpse and some colors of ‘the Lowcountry’, and an entirely enjoyable afternoon.

At the end of the tour Dylan made her way back to her aircraft carrier, while the rest of my family sought out some grub. Just coming off the water we were in the mood for some sea food. Opting for this rustic and scenic seafood restaurant, advertised by this beauty…

Shem Creek is a stream that flows out into the harbor and the sea. It is the home, or destination for many of the local fishing and shrimp fleets in the area. The ‘advertised’ views are nice and we had a great seafood dinner while the sun slowly set.

Dylan had her aquarium trip on Sunday, complete with an educational show on Sharks. I hear it was OK.

Hoping on a Shark

We gathered her up, fed her, bathed her, and sent her off to nap (do you think the girls got much sleep on a rolling, empty air craft carrier without their parents?)

All in all, this ‘Charmed’ girl has had quite a summer including Disney World to radio stations and stairclimbing to aircraft carriers. It’s going to be hard to beat!

And let’s not forget about our youngest child following in Dylan’s wake.

Exploring some new things too

She is making a splash herself this summer.

My summer? I can’t seem to get my modeling career off the ground.

Don't ask....

Have a great week everyone! I’ll try to do better next time!
