Catching up

And now for something completely different.

Godzilla terrorizing downtown this week:

“We saw a dinosaur walking down the street,” Gary Shelby said.

“A person dressed as a Tyrannosaurus rex (Godzilla, right?) startled a pair of carriage horses in downtown Charleston on Thursday, injuring one of the horses and the driver.

Shelby Salvador and her husband, Gary, watched the scene unfold from their corner table at Tommy Condon’s Restaurant.

When the carriage got to 160 Church St., the dinosaur stopped and began making growling noises at the horses. This spooked the horses and they began backing up. The carriage then struck an unoccupied vehicle and caused minor damage to its bumper.”

The driver lost his balance and was thrown from the carriage during the incident, he said. One of the carriage’s wheels rolled over one of the driver’s legs.

Gary said he decided to confront the costumed carnivore and noticed that the person underneath was a female.

According to Phil Bailey, a public relations representative retained by Palmetto Carriage Works, the carriage was nearing the end of its tour route and the driver shouted at the T-Rex, warning that its antics would scare the horses. But the theropod’s alleged snarling spooked the horses, causing them to back up and jackknife the carriage, Bailey said. One horse, named Yogi, fell, and the driver was thrown out of the carriage. The other horse, Boo Boo, was not injured. Source: Post and Courier

And that may have been the most blog worthy activity around these parts since our ill-fated Disney Cruise.

With apologies, I and we have been busy. My new job is a real challenge and the girls are getting busier and busier. But the words that fly out of their mouth these days are not nearly as cute as they were 4 years ago.

Still, a lot has happened. For instance, we all got a year older over the last 3 months. Its been a birthday parade, one after another about every two weeks. It has been confirmed, I am now old as dirt.

But, instead of giving you a lengthy play-by-play after the news clip above, let me ‘catch you up’ in pictures over the last 3 months.

Dylan had her birthday in March, It was her turn to have a party this year

She wanted a skating party at the local ice rink again.

She’s getting bigger!

Do you remember her when….

When this was as old as I wanted her to look..

Some of us think it is ‘scary’ how big she is getting!

Gosh, this 3rd grader invited more boys than girls!

Skylar’s birthday was next. She is turning 7.

And while her birthday was not as extravagant this year Aunt Sue and Grandma made up for it on their visit for Easter.

Getting Bigger too!

Yes Easter… and the girls got spoiled all over again. Like ‘multiple’ Easter Baskets?

Skylar also earned ‘Student of the Month’ in April

Look at her, “I’m so cool’!

While Dylan won a bike at a Science night that same week.

Dylan also earned a Daddy Date Night after her excellent report card and blowing away her reading goals.

She chose a place where they have a chocolate fountain.

We even caught a movie or two.

This one really rocked. It was a good, funny, ‘family‘ movie; after you got past all the bad language

Then it turned May and it was Mommy’s birthday and just recently Daddy’s birthday. But Dylan could only think of one thing:

How soon would the pool be open?

Has it been 30 minutes yet?

And it has been for about a month now.

I have been working hard on putting in more tropical landscaping, trying to make this a tropical escape.

A place where the kids can play without looking elsewhere.

To do something nice for them that neither Mom nor I had growing up.

Where every Saturday or Sunday it feels like a vacation around 4 or 5 o’clock.

Washed in the ocean; dried in the sun

So that more and more Saturdays can look like this for Mom and Dad.

Life in the fast lane

And that is it from the Spring. Consider yourself Caught Up!

We are now getting ready for summer and sadly this self-proclaimed beach bum may not see the beach any time soon as the pool gets warmer and warmer and a heck of a lot closer.

Have a great week knuckleheads!

I’ll try to do better this summer!

Hi Gang!

Happy Weekend everyone!

Can you believe it? The summer is dwindling down and slipping away..

We were tying up some last family type things before the first week of school.

Last week Mom’s work had another great Family / Employee appreciation day. Her company always does a great job in making a nice outing on a Saturday. So we got all dressed up for the event.

The day was filled with fun; fun video games, fun with waterslides…

Even fun with a Talent Competition….

We had to cool down with a great Sno Ball, ahh, Sno Cone

a post sno ball

Now when I was a kid peddling sno balls with my friend in our wagon we never gave out straws with the sno balls. Here, Skye just heads right for the syrup with her straw. If we would have handed out straws when I was a kid we could have charged for refills or had a lot more business!

The following Sunday we decided to cool off in the pool with one of our ‘soon to be famous’ Cannonball Competitions!

We had a lot of fun splashing the water out of the pool.

Yes, the pool. It’s been a long hard fight (working with contractors is a nightmare!) to get this pool up and running this summer. But it’s finally ready to use and enjoy.

She's waited a long time for her pool

She’s waited a long time for her pool…and her magic carpet ride

It looks like the pool is finally coming alive. And this is one of my favorite retreats now at night…

Hiding beneath the water, watching the cascading lights on both the floor of the pool and the ceiling of the water. Swimming peacefully alone at night has been such an escape; refreshing, relaxing and rewarding. If you are looking for me after dark (and the kids go are in bed) you might find me here.

Monday then was the first day of school! Yayyyy!

Dylan was ready……

Her 'Bunny' travels everywhere with her evidently..

Poor Skylar had a fever of 104 though and sat out her two first days. But after several trips to the doctors we got her feeling better and with that fun smile on her face.

Happy first day of Kindergarten Skylar!

And YOUR beginning of a great scholastic career too!

Only 16 more years till I can retire…..

Happy Weekend everyone!

Don’t forget to dance and have fun like no one is watching!

Isn’t this worth it?

And this is just the beginning of our Spring week with the Great Aunt Sue!

If only….

I was thinking Sunday night, after we put the girls to bed, if only there was a beer, or whine wine, or a tequila that tasted like….

Banana Pudding!

I absolutely love banana pudding, which helped to make Sunday so great. But I’ll get back to that.

This past weekend, Sunday included, was a To-Do list type of weekend. I really need to get some things done around the house because after my procedure in 3 weeks I won’t be much good at anything for awhile.

So Sunday, the bulk of the day revolved around yard work, organizing the garage some more and finding the stink in my car (long story)

Sunday turned out to be a beautiful day, weather wise, with a cool breeze blowing from the north. So I jumped on the Honey To Do list right after lunch.

The comfortable temperatures allowed me to make super fast times and so, not wanting to waste a great weather Sunday, asked Mom if I should fill up our two old kiddie pools for the girls when they get up from their naps.

She gave me a nod and it was on.

Like I said, we have two. We had one but Aunt Sue thought we could use another. So stopping short of giving each of the girls their own pool I became a little creative with these small pools and decided to make a giant water slide with the second one

Hoped its big enough

Hoped its big enough

Dylan was the first one up. She was very open to playing outside in the water and so we jumped and splashed and squirted each other for awhile. The dog did not escape the mayhem either.

We could fire a stream of water at him and he would light up around our yard, like only greyhounds can do. I literally was scared, he was going so fast in our small confined back yard.

At one point he decided to change his circle around our backyard and cut in front of the above swing set, leaping over the extended hose at one end of the swing set and soaring past the blue wading pool beneath the sliding board at the other end.

Yes, in one stretch his momentum and powerful back legs let him leap literally from one end of the swing set to the other without breaking stride. I was in awe.

Skylar was up by now. Mom had dressed her in yet another darling swim suit. Thanks Grandmas!

This one was too cute! It was a little yellow and black striped one piece. She looked like a bumble bee!

Can you see the little wings on her Bee swimsuit?

Can you see the little wings on her Bee swimsuit?

I asked her if she was a bumble bee.

She said, “No! I’m a super hero!

I asked, “Who are you then?”

She said “Super Beee. Bzzzzzzzz!

I'm going to sting you!

I’m going to sting you!

Dylan has always been our daredevil. And she had gone down the baby waterside several times already, before Skylar woke from her nap. But I thought the slide was just Skylar’s size. So I asked her ‘How about it?  Want to give it a try?’

And she looked it over, gave it some thought and walked right up those steps and had at it!

From that point on it was just a great wet and warm summer afternoon. The girls wet slid and splashed and squirted and laughed and chased. Typical kid stuff on the back end of naps on a wonderful summer afternoon.

Yes, Chum leaped over both pools in one giant stretch, but not while the girls had the hose out

Here is a quick window into the afternoon as Dylan shows you her Gabby Douglas type skills while Skylar shows you the true meaning of ‘Chillin’ by the pool‘ at our house…

We had a great little afternoon after naps. Everyone was out enjoying the favorable temps, getting in on the fun, and sun or just chillin’ in their own way…..ah…..ah…

Will someone bring me a menu? I'd like to place an order...

Will someone bring me a menu? I’d like to place an order…

Even Chum found time to soak up some shade and just ‘be’ in his new home….

But eventually the shadows got a little longer in our backyard and the tummies got a bit emptier.

So Mom wrangled the girls upstairs to get baths for school in the morning while I was left with the task of dinner.

The hour was a bit late to go out so I just went with our outdoor summer theme.

I ran down to the local Piggly Wiggly and bought something for a cookout so we could eat outside.

Now if you know the stories behind our girls, you can’t really say cookouts are part of their heritage but summer cookouts were a big part of my growing up and so I tried a cheap fast all-American version of it…Hot Dogs, Coleslaw, and (my favorite) Banana Pudding.

Skylar screams, “Happy Pool Day!” as we celebrated the simple fun we had that day at dinner.

This afternoon no one cried, or played hours on the phone, or stole the other’s doll.  Just good clean fun.

And no one saw Daddy steal seconds of the banana pudding, right out of the container, while the girls were upstairs getting stories read to them before nighttime either.

Gosh I really love this stuff! If only…..

“Hey Dylan? What are you doing here? I thought you were reading upstairs. What? You want some too?”

Have a great end-of-summer week everyone!

Oh yea, here is my new favorite commercial that I told you about last week…

I think I told you why….

Its the SONG! (chichi) Summer, Banana Pudding and Jeans On!
