OUR LIFE IN 3D

The Home of Daddy's Day Dare! ~ I am just trying to stay above water

Advent Sunday

Mom(riding in the car): So Dad, you want a digital clock for Christmas this year?

Dad: Well, yes, a clock with an alarm.

Mom: A clock with dual alarms!

Dad: Yes. And Digits! Dylan don’t you want a digital clock for Christmas too? You haven’t mentioned it yet?

Dylan: Nah, I’m asking for a lot of things already.

Dad: A lot of things? I only know of a handful of things you are wanting for Christmas?

Dylan: I know. I am telling the rest to Santa Clause.

Dad: How?

Dylan: In a letter. I’m testing this whole Santa Clause theory, to see if I only ask Santa for toys but don’t tell Mom and Dad, to see if I still get everything I asked for from Santa or not.

Dad: Well good luck with that!

(Note to self… the oldest one has out smarted me again!)

No Miracles Of Christmas this year for that one!

December started off with a mini celebration. I had my annual cancer check up with Dr. O.

He said I was perfect. That there was no cancer detectable.

So once again I celebrated with my donuts!

You have to die of something, right?

So the weekend rolled around and with it the start of December, which my kids know all too well as the day that Lana, our Elf On The Shelf arrives!

They were excited about it too!

The enjoyed some of the shenanigans ol’ Lana got into last Christmas.

Well Saturday, they eventually did find her as we were unpacking some Christmas decorations, laying face down in a box, with other Christmas decorations.

So Dylan (the kid with Santa’s email apparently) left her a note to pick out her stocking.

The next Day Lana did not disappoint!

She hung the stocking she wanted up with the rest of our family’s Christmas stockings, where we hang Grandma’s stocking actually, she threw Grandma’s stocking on the floor and then tried to blend in with our family other ways…

I should not complain too much. I hear some of these Elves On Shelves are quite mischievous!

Trying to steal the Star off the tree…

So I feel a bit relaxed for the Elf that Santa sent to our home.

(Hmmm…I wonder of Lana can get a hold of Dylan’s Christmas list this year?)

Later this weekend we went hunting for our annual Christmas tree to decorate.

I hear this year’s supply of tree’s was down. And I did have a hard time finding one the size that we usually get.

But I did find this big, thick one…

This may be our biggest one to date!

So I got a new tree stand to hold a bigger tree and another string of lights to let the girls have at it!

And midway through the first Sunday of Advent the chore was done!

Tree up..Check

Lights and ornaments up..Check

Needles swept up … Check

Train set up…Check

Christmas Village, Dickens’s people and forest trees set up…Check

Old brick border taped, stapled and thumb-tacked up…Check

Sweep for more needles…check

Griswold Tree Lighting snafu…. ahh..well that happened Thanksgiving…..when me Smoker caught fire..

Voilà!

And so endth the first Sunday of Advent!

It was busy and tiring but rewarding!

Christmas is coming… are you ready, as we celebrate the birth of baby Jesus?

We are getting there. But right now I am ready to call it a night.

Thanks for dropping by everyone! Let the Season begin!

I will try to do a better job next time knuckleheads cause it is late.

Lana, can you get me another egg nog?  And where’s Dylan’s list?”

Halloween 2018

I know, I know… Halloween was so last month.

I am sorry.

I was either out of town mentally or physically these last few weeks but I did want to try to squeeze in a Halloween post for friends and family before I get a holiday behind…ahhh….

I mean, get behind one holiday post when another  holiday comes.

I am such a procrastinator.

Anyway, here are fun, happy, sweet pictures of my two little delicate flowers…

Ahhh…

How embarrassing.

They seem to be beating up my Halloween decorations.

At first they were both going to be Greek Goddesses. You know how I like a Greek Goddess. But after wearing her’s for 3 days in a row, Dylan decided to make her own outfit by combining a Super Girl top with a Wonder Woman bottom.

Skye, and her goddess self (she is Greek after all), stayed home this year to hand out candy with mom while lil D and I hit the pavements in search of some treats.

Again the neighborhood did not disappoint as far as the decorations.

These people really go all out!

When I was little all we put out was a jack-o-lantern with a candle inside…that never seemed to make it through the night

This house, D and I both thought the Lord of the Rings looking guy was part of the decorations. But the stolic relic moved!
And handed out some candy..

Creepy!

And as the sun began to set, the neighborhood began to come alive with lights and tricks and treats…

Spooky!

One of my fav houses actually had a sign out front “Trick Or Drinks” in which they had a picnic table set up with cold local microbrews..

It was a popular house with the adults!

So since it was at the end of our walk,

…and we were headed home soon I thought I might try a Lowcountry Lager,

prostate be damned! (cool Halloween pun)

I did not go all out decorating at our house this year.

Why?

Come on!?

Its football season! My weekends are tied up!

But I did get lots of rav-reviews for one decoration, my fountain of blood.

mawah ha-ha-ha-ha (scary laugh)

So you wanted to know what I was dressed up as?

I know what you are thinking….

This year I dressed up as a parent

…and a 3-headed monster…

mawah ha-ha-ha-ha

No really cool videos this year, but I did reminisce  about one from years gone by as our little D went door to door. And then at the end of the video the little 3 year old divides up her candy booty and organizes it.

She separates it for a special surprise celebration….her marriage.

If you can stomach family videos the end is too cute! But I have to say that.

The video actually starts out at a Halloween 5K I was in, then moves over to our local Texas Roadhouse where the manager had a fondness for our girls ( I do not mean that in a creepy way)

Trick or Treat everyone!

I hope yours was scary and sweet.

That is all for now. I will try to do a better job next month when we highlight our Thanksgiving..

Enjoy your holiday!

Happy Labor Day

I hope you had a relaxing and enjoyable Labor Day weekend!

First, my thoughts and prayers go out to those in South Florida and on the Gulf Coast with Gordon making things wet. But I know you have all seen this drill before. Best of luck!

Can you believe its the end of the summer already? It won’t be long until we are carving turkeys and trimming trees it seems.

But I digress…

Well we finally got caught up on everything life had to throw at us this weekend and with the 3 day weekend we finally..FINALLY,  made it out to the beach.

I say Finally because I do not think I even made it out to our own beach last year. And this was our first trip to the beach, here at the end of the summer, this year.

We made it out to my school’s Beach House again.

If you remember, once upon a time, we used to frequent this beach house A LOT!

Do any of you remember all those blog posts?

We played, we swam,

Or a little of both…

we burned, er, tanned, marinated a little. We sautéed in the sun listening to Jimmy Buffet’s Tin Cup Chalice.

Or took my greyhound for a walk and let him chase seagulls.

But then things changed a bit and child number one, and then number two made going to the beach a little more challenging..

And then the pool…

And trips to the beach just seemed more like work than an escape.

What I have been missing is the spiritual essence of the coast however.

Sometimes we just need that escape. And this week has been one of those weeks.

This week, and actually the last few months, have been tough for me though, with a lot going on at home and at work and personally. It has taken its toll. And so this day I thought I might take another long walk on the beach, talking with God and hoping for answers.

Have you ever felt a need for that?

It was a good walk. Not too hot or sunny.

I spied the usual suspects along my beach that had been there before.

Sea vultures

…Pelicans looking for food.

The waves were nice size since we are in September.

and the surfers were out.

Touristy fishermen…

even more pelicans

Everyone was with me it seemed… but the One I was hoping for.

….

At the end of my walk it was just me; along with other flotsam and jetsam.

Alone. By our self.

No answers found. Not even a greeting. Or a reply.

Maybe that is an answer also.

Back at the Beach House young Skylar found a friend and was loving the sea.

She gets that from me!

She cracked her collarbone this week on our bike ride to school.

She’s tough.

She gets that from me as well.

We both love the sea!

Oh, to grow old on the beach!

Just give me oysters and beer
For dinner every day of the year
And I’ll feel fine……I’ll feel fine

I want to be there
Want to go back down and lie beside the sea there
With a Tin Cup for a Chalice,

fill it up with good red wine
And we’ll be chewin’ on a honeysuckle vine

Yeah now the sun goes sliding across the water
Sail boats they go searching for the breeze
Salt air it ain’t thin
It can stick right to your skin, and make you feel fine
Makes you feel fine

I wanna be there
Wanna go back down and get high by the sea there
With a Tin Cup for a Chalice,

fill it up with good red wine
And I’m a chewin’ on a honeysuckle vine

Yes and now you heard my strange proposal
So get that Truck up and let’s move
I wanna be there before the day
Tries to steal away and leave us behind
I’ve made up my mind..

That’s it for now knuckleheads!

I will try to do a better job next time!

Thanks for dropping by!

I rode my bike to school today!

All the grandmothers here keep asking, what did you wear on the first day of school?

I had to tell them, “Work clothes”. I went to work after I dropped the girls off!

Yes it was the first day of school this past Monday. But not just any school. This year our girls are going to a new school, never-been-opened, no-one-has-ever-sat-at-this-desk-before school. It smelled like a new car!

Our area is growing such that the previous school was getting overcrowded and need a new one to be built. We actually moved into the neighborhood, 5 years ago, where the school was supposed to be built.

Well it’s finally here!

I don’t know if the girls can appreciate a new school or not. Maybe when they are older and the school starts to look weathered and worn. In fact they barely got the school finished on time. The ribbon cutting was moved  back two weeks until last Saturday. Plans for the school include an interactive park neighboring the school, and new town rec center and a playground.

That’s right they didn’t get to build the playground yet.

It’s really to hot anyway.

But the first day of school wasn’t too bad…

It was an organized chaos. But easily half the cars or traffic then we were used to.

….cause half of the old school is coming here now.

Day 1 Organized Chaos

Oh…. you were wondering what our kids wore?

First Day Smiles!

Well, it looks like they wore clothes to play for the playground!

But Dylan wore something else!

Skye is in trance the first day

She wore her bedroom in her 40lb back pack!

I don’t know how she does not fall over backwards!

Skye still looks stunned that her summer vacation has come to and brake-screeching halt.

And then…

AND THEN…

They did not open the doors on time the first day!

The doors were easily 10 minutes late opening on opening day.

Maybe somebody did not gt the memo

….and went to the old school?

Storing Eagles

Overall it was an easy transition on Day 1 and the girls had a good experience.

~Did I tell you it was brand new?~

Day 2

Was a bit less hectic although the doors, again, did not open until 10 minutes later

Day 2 Eazy Peezy

I was wondering if maybe I did not get the memo at this point?

Day 3

Felt almost routine and even though we got there when they opened the doors.

This is what the main corridor looked like after I dropped off the girls off in their class and headed back out to my car…

Crickets!

Day 3 Crickets!!

I am getting up and to school Waaaaaaayyy to early!

Day 4

So on day 4 we decided to switch things up a bit and we all rode our bikes to school!!

Ladies and Gentlemen, can you all remember that?

Pulling up to school in your own cool bike and silently smirking while other kids got out of cars and buses?

I got the girls some way-cool bike locks that light up and actually mount on your bike….

….uh wait.

What do you mean they have been around forever?

Back in the day when I rode my bike to school, up hill all the way, in rain and snow, and we only used a stinkin’ key!

….in the dark.

I, I mean THEY, had a lot of fun riding to school and I am happy to say none of my girls rode over any new kindergartners or mommies with strollers.

I mentioned the ribbon cutting ceremony, that was actually last Saturday. And while they let the School Board introduce and thank each other they did let any returning chorus members from the previous school lead the room in the Star Spangled Banner..

Sorry, the lens got a little Teary

..and then we found our self in the middle of the first PTA meeting!

This mega event actually lulled the girl’s grandmother and Aunt Sue in town for the cutting of ribbons.

So Dylan got all dressed up

Maybe something more of what the grandmothers had in mind for a new school pic

And with Aunt Sue in town you know we had to take advantage of any and all Photo Ops..

Don’t Just Fly, Soar!

Sorry I kinda missed the school slogan above there with my pic.

I should have just relied on Aunt Sue

The next day, a Sunday, I actually worked and  handed out some free samples of the snacks I peddle for a living… for kids and back to school lunches. But I still took the opportunity to bond with my child as she graciously agreed to come with me and keep me company.

And why not?

She got to meet a dinosaur!

In other news…

After 4 long months we finally got our construction team to complete a new gazebo in our back yard…at the end of the summer

I don’t know if you remember or not but the old metal one took a beating from last year’s hurricane and then last winter’s freakish snow storm.

It couldn’t bare the weight, so we had to find a new one..

Yes, wood piers, buried 6 feet deep into concrete.

I may get a little more sleep during this year’s hurricane.

The view is changing from this side too as someone is sneaking in from the side and ruining any ideas of ‘private memories’ in the pool again. This may be the last summer to use it before neighbors start watching us from behind.

I wish I could stop them.

But I can’t.

That’s it from my zip code this week knuckleheads. Be sure to keep an eye on your young ones.

One of our kids just had a predator ask her to do things on her YouTube channel. You can never be too safe! The other is having misgivings about going back to school and is throwing tantrums. I may need to hire a good child therapist! They won’t be young forever. Si Dieu le veut!

Have a great weekend!

Where the clouds grow

So how is your summer?

Hot?

Cookouts? Pools and beaches?

Well we wanted to get away from all the heat somewhat and do a duplicate trip to the mountains, like we did last summer, to escape the heat and humidity on the coast.

This year we found a wonderful cabin tucked up in the heart and isolation of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Burnsville, NC.

Blue Ridge Mountains.

Yep, way up there!

Yes we found a wonderful cabin that was loaded with nearby mountain perks.

Welcome to Trillium

This was no hot, stinky Yert, like we learned our lesson from last year!

This house was very nice and comfortable PLUS located on the side of a mountain, only a short walk from their Riverwalk.

Riverwalk was a nice stream-side pavilion with extras to make a mountain stay fun! In the picture you can make out a make-shift zip line chair for the kids, inner tubes to go ‘tubing’ down the local stream, hammocks, grills, and even a nice fire pit area.

That’s one skinny bear

That’s right…the owner let us bring our greyhound up to the mountain too….

to the Blue Ridge Mountains where Clouds and God’s magnificence seemed to grow right in front of you every morning!

But do you think we stayed at Riverwalk and this nice cabin (more on that later) for 3 days?

No!

We had things to do!

The first thing we did was ride back ‘down’ the mountains to go white water rafting on the Nantahala River, like we did last year.

Driving ‘down’ to the Nantahalla River

It was an amazing  2 hour car journey through the mountains taking in more beautiful scenes and clouds literally at eye level…

Clouds hiding in the mountains

We ended up at the Nantahala Outdoor Center (NOC) for a 2 hour trip on the mild class 1, 2,and 3 rapids. As you can imagine, no cameras or cells here.

The girls thought themselves (miniature) rock stars for navigating the rapids so well!

But also at the NOC was zip lining…

….and “zip line obstacle course”.

Which was a loose way of stating a paid for 30 various-ways-of-torture-and-fear-as-you-as-you-fall-to-your-death play trap.

The kids loved it!!!

Apparently, anyone with good shoulders, and under the age of 50, really enjoyed dangling 40 feet up by a thin rope, as you struggle to put a foot on something sturdy below you, before you plummet horribly to your death, leaving nothing but your guts and stream of horrid loud screams all the way down behind you.

…Like I did when I put my first foot out on the nothing below…

Can you make that out?

She is standing on a rope with the only thing to hang on to are other vertical ropes, spread just past a normal person’s out stretched arms.

Who thinks these things up?

The wooden cylinders hanging from the blue rope above that torture device is what I used to announce to everyone in the park with in the sound of my scream that Andy was attempting this now.

Stepping from one unstable tube to the next. Lets just pretend that is me up there. I was screaming like a baby…

Those tubes are just suspended by a single rope, nothing sturdy mind you, and just far enough apart  for me not to be able to reach them with my trembling outstretched knobby legs.

I eventually made it to the end of the first course, collected myself, tried to regain my cool, searched to make sure all my limbs were still in their sockets and crawled to the exit door……where 15 giggling junior high girls were skipping their way up to their version of ‘fun’.

Ahhhhh!!!!!

Class 5 rapids are like a slow jog on the terror meter compared to this place!

Did I tell you I almost fell to my death?

5 times?!!

Each of our girls went through the Obstacle Course twice  😦

They seemed quite proud of themselves

“Great day Mom! Hey, did you see Daddy’s face when he stepped out on that obstacle course? That was priceless!”

Day two was less of a car ride, as we went 30 minutes up the mountain to a small town called Spruce Pine to the Springmaid Mountain Resort for some trail riding on horseback and other mountain activities.

Horse riding among the clouds

Now, this was my first time on the back of a horse, while our girls have ridden them a few times, albeit briefly at the zoo.

They seemed to take right to it!

Skye’s horse ‘Chucky’ liked to eat!

While Dylan’s horse was more of a Maverick

Riding Hidalgo. Actually her name was Buttercup.

The idea was to do some trail riding though the mountain. ‘We’ just had to guide the horses on the narrow and muddy mountain trails…

trying to take a picture on horseback

As well as across and through some creeks and unspoiled natural mountain lands

Beautiful!

We all had the time of our lives.

And my Tennessee Walker had me feeling like General Custer, Eastwood, and Geronimo all rolled into one.

This was a great recommendation!

(although I still smell like horses)

With a few more hours to kill on the side of the mountain we opted for some tube riding down the local North Toe River there at the resort.

Again, cameras and phones were not an option here but if they were….

IF THEY WERE

….. we all would be having the laugh of a lifetime as one or more of us tried to sit down into an inner tube in a fairly rapid current. I’ll let your imaginations do the rest.

It was Vaudeville meets Davey Crockett.

We had to hike up a mountain trail, with inner tubes in hand, to make it to the launch point. And then the river tubing trip took about a third of the time it took to hike there. But we did have so much fun we decided to hike the trail twice just to have some more fun….and laughs and hilarity(!)

Then it was lunch in downtown Spruce Pines at a Caribbean Restaurant called the Tropical Grill (you can’t take the beach out of the bum) and then back to the cabin we went.

At the end of the three days we asked our girls what was their favorite part of the trip.

For the parents it was a unanimous Horse Trail Riding. But not for the girls. They both enjoyed staying at our fancy  Cabin, Trillium the best.

What?

The girls would have been happy enough not ever leaving the cabin and the nearby Riverwalk.

After all, it did have a nice view on the side of the mountain…

It had a little bit of a view

…from the hot tub

Not bad, eh?

The girls were in it every day.

But in this cabin in the mountains, it was not ‘roughing it’.

Inside Trillium

The cabin had all the conveniences of home…

A nice, modern fully stocked kitchen and stairs leading up to the loft

And a nice loft upstairs for the girls to sleep…

view from the loft

This is my version of camping, ahhh, ‘camping’ at its best!

It was a great hideaway, getaway on the side of a mountain in the summer..

The amenities included the Riverwalk with tubing, zip lining, campfires, fishing,..

deer (and bears) in the field…

Early morning with a deer looking for breakfast

and more.

Plus….

it is located in the mountains where clouds begin to grow…

If you live in the southeast and this sounds like a getaway for you click here for more info on Trillium. Just tell the owner Andy sent you….you will not regret it!

Their motto is “Its a Reason for Every Season”.

And fall, winter, and spring just fell on our bucket list here at Trillium.
