DYLANism: What’s that in your pocket?

This morning I woke up and got up for breakfast. I made it all the way to the shower before either of our kids woke up. Dylan usually wakes up before I do but she seems to be running a bit of a fever the past two days and so has slept a little bit later.

I got out of the shower, dried off, and started the rest of my routine. Dylan walked in our bathroom, all quiet, sleepy and passive, about the same time Mom rotated into the shower from her nightly slumber. Luckily,  I was able to get my underwear on before Dylan turned the corner.

Dylan stood there watching me brush my teeth in my underwear. When I was done she asked, “is that a pocket Daddy?” looking at the sewn fly in my boxers.

Now, I realize the bulk of my readers are female but I have to guess you know what athletic boxers look like, so I will spare you the description, and how the fly is sewn on to the front.  🙂 For those of you that can’t imagine, I would just like to leave you with the adjectives: snug, majestic, and Micheal Jordon.

OK, I would like to leave you with that description but it wouldn’t be entirely true. And I know Micheal Jordan isn’t exactly an adjective but Hanes is.

Dylan left the door hanging wide open for a witty reply however with the ‘pocket‘ question. But, as I looked over my shoulder to see Mommy looking at me in a somewhat unglamorous position, after staggering into  the shower room (she rarely opens her eyes when she makes this trip), I figured I better behave.

I replied, “why yes Dylan it is a pocket?”

“What’s it for Daddy?”

The one liners are just sitting on the tip of my tongue but rolling with it I told her, “Well I can put my keys in there. Or my wallet…..Or both.”

Dylan deduces, ” Isn’t it hard to find there Daddy?”  (thanks sport)

I agreed, “Well that’s the idea Dylan” as I looked over to Mommy for approval.

Mommy just shook her head and flushed her face into the palms of her hands in disbelief.

I don’t know what she was shaking her head about? I was proud of myself for keeping the conversation to a ‘G’ rating and yet still a wee bit amusing (pardon the pun)

So, to all you new parents out there, you have these conversations  to look forward too!

No, there’s no money in there…

DYLANism: a learning experience

Our two year old was in her bedroom. Mommy was trying to undress her and get her PJ’s on. Resisting all of Mom’s coaching, our two year old finally threw something at her sister.

Mommy immediately corrected Skylar saying, “There is no throwing things in the house” as she smacked Skylar’s hand. Skylar instantly began to cry.

Dylan, being the great and caring big sister that she has been, walked over to the wailing Skylar. In a comforting manner, she patted her little sister’s hand and told her, “Life’s tough sweetie.”

This girl is ALL heart. Have a great weekend everyone!

Psychologist is in 5 cents please

BIG Surprise!

One of the great things about kids is the simplest things make them so happy. Dylan just had a birthday for instance. The first gift she opened was a toy. The next three gifts she opened were clothing. She didn’t even open the clothes up to see what they looked like. She just moved on to the next present. Our youngest played with the boxes.

Then, last Thursday the greatest gift just appeared. I didn’t go shopping for it. She didn’t see it on TV. It wasn’t given by an awesome grandmother. I couldn’t even tell you what this spectacular gift is. Don’t even have a name for it! In fact this whatever-it-is just showed up in the back of a truck when we received a delivery at work. At work, we just looked at each other and asked, “what is that?” I just knew it would be a hilarious delight for both our kids; a kinda mid birthday-week month treat. It was big. It was fun. And it had indoor jump castle written all over it.

The BIG Surprise barely fit in the back of my car. We sat down to eat dinner and I told the girls I had a Big surprise for them if they finished there dinner. Right away the questions started.

“What is it?”

“It’s a surprise.”

“Is it a dog?”

“No. Bigger.”

“Is it a car?”

“No, bigger.”

“Is it a house?”

“Not that big.”

And so they ate their dinner without incident, just a flurry of questions. Afterwards, I asked them to gather in the living room and cleared some room for them. Here’s a blurry video from the ‘Sofa Cam’ of the craziness:

The BIG Surprise started out as a huge inflated pillow that was then covered with a thick brown paper bag material to keep it from getting punctured. It was used on the truck as a spacer to keep things packed close. You may have seen miniature versions of this in things you receive in the mail.

The kids hollered and laughed! Someone laughed so hard they  peed in their pants. Someone else got laughs as they did something else in their pants in the free for all. (Darn mommy and her Vulcan hearing!).

In the end a sweaty Dylan came over and gave me a hug and said, “Dad this is the best present ever!”

Score one for Dad.And on with the birthday-week month….

Who’s going to pay for all this?

Today is the 1 week anniversary of our trip to a favorite local Children’s Museum, Edventure in Columbia, SC. Similar to the field trip at the aquarium the week before, I had high hopes for some good fun with for the kids. PLUS, there will be a total of 4 adults watching 3 kids. Those are my kinda numbers on my weekly day of rest!

The museum is named “Edventure” for the 40 foot tall child sitting inside the front doors. Its pretty good! Behind the statue, or maybe, inside, is a 3 story jungle gym mixed with the inside frame work of the human body. Kinda cool! These kids climb, slide, hide, jump and play all inside the human body.

Dylan entering Wonderland!

We got there early and, with low numbers of visitors, we could actually hear Ed’s heart beat. ~ which actually scared Dylan from playing on that level. Skylar, undaunted,  found fun just lying in Ed’s stomach, along with an ice cream sandwich and a wedge of orange.

Hiding in Ed's stomach

“Come on kids, we can’t spend all day here, just playing! Lets go explore and learn something!” Wishful thinking?

Running through the intestines

So we headed down the east wing where the kids ran into a kid’s size grocery store. Now I didn’t want to spend yet another weekend in a grocery store but the kids still had tons of fun shopping, pulling things off the shelf, and ‘paying for it’. “Did you kids bring any money?”

Who has some money?

All of the sudden I was imagining these kids as big people, with their careful scanning the plastic vegetables, picking the right milk, and hoarding all the candy they could find. Maybe it was the caffeine kicking in but it started to be fun imagining these kids as what they may be like when they get older. A look into the crystal ball! Yea, it was a lot of caffeine.

Now was that whole milk or fat free?

As luck would have it in the next room they got to play veterinarian. That’s a good career! This may be fun! Both the kids enjoy animals so much.

He might need some band aids...

Then, having fun with my vision of them being adults and seeing what their natural aptitudes are, I quickly pushed them into the next room. There they could practice being a dentist! More money, less hours, right? They had fun.

He's not brushing his teeth very good, is he?

Why stop there though? Why shouldn’t my kids be doctors? They are both super smart! They seemed to take quite naturally to the role and I could imagine them visiting more often at my retirement house on that cliff in the Caribbean. Hmmmmm…

Where did I put those shots?

Now where’s Skylar? Looking around it seems she found her way in front of the TV camera! She looked great as a TV anchor woman.

She really enjoyed seeing herself on TV. She has such a warm and natural smile!

Hi Mom! I'm on TV....

She should compliment my doctor in the family quite well! Wait? Where’d she go? Following the sound of laughter I see her driving heavy machinery at a construction site. Hey! What happened to being a doctor?

Closing out the ‘aptitude wing’ and calculating these kid’s college loans we headed back past Big Ed. I wondered what else these kids like to do as adults as we headed down to the west wing. I soon found out…..these kids like to travel!

They had a blast at the shindig in Africa and dancing to the drums. They even tried to join in with drums and the African dances. Everybody loved it. ~ I’ve never been to Africa…..

Lets have a dance party!

Next they took a boat, then walked across the swaying bridge to Timbuktu. They visited a village. Tried to make some native baskets. Tried to do a native hair style. They even got to climb on (and slide off) a life-size camel. ..living the camel life!

Giddyap horsey! Giddyap!

We crossed another continent or two, ending upstairs at a river side camp site. Phew! This traveling can ware a body out!

Nap time

We went down the other wing to find giant size games of Battleship, chess, checkers, Wii bowling and Sheldon’s favorite, Jenga. I learned Jenga comes from a Swahili word meaning “to build”. Take that Sheldon!

We spent some time in the music room where the kids loved to jump on the hopscotch pad and make music from their bouncing. Where do you get this energy?

Daddy, come join our band

With their last bit of energy they begged to climb through Big Ed one more time before we headed on back down the highway and the over due, but well earned naps, and some peace and quiet for Mom and Dad. Plus a bit more caffeine.

Lets go downstairs to play one more time

It was a big day with lots of Big adventures. An ice cream sandwich for Dad and some Peanut Butter M&M’s for Mom on the car ride home, made the day complete. Now, how much tuition will I need for their new found careers? Hmmmm…

Pop Quiz!

So it is four days after Christmas. Most of our Christmas decorations are still up. We still have 6 months worth of cookies and other sweets stacked on our breakfast bar. New presents are still laying helter-skelter on our living room floor. So I was curious to see what my oldest daughter Dylan, at 3 3/4 years old, gained from all this year’s activity and celebration. As a fairly new parent I am always eager to see any development for our girls. Lets see what Dylan retained this Christmas in this year’s Pop Quiz:
1) Why do we celebrate Christmas?  A= “I don’t know”  …Daddy (disappointed sigh)

2) What is your favorite thing about Christmas? A= Disney Princess Castle

3) What will you miss the most about Christmas? A= “Hmmmm? Aunt Sue! (After some heavy coaching from Aunt Sue)

4) Where did all your presents come from? A = without hesitation, “Santa!”

5) What was your favorite present? A = Princess Castle!”

6) What did your little sister like the most about Christmas? A = “Winnie the pooh and the pink one” (Piglet)

7) What was your favorite thing you ate this year? A =  “Macaroni and Cheese!”    (What? With all these cookies?!!)

8) How long should we celebrate Christmas? A = “Until Friday.” (Aunt Sue and Uncle John go home on Friday)

9) How much did we spend this year to celebrate Christmas? A = “Hmmm….a little” ( this was her hardest one to answer)

10) What will you look forward to next year for Christmas? A = “Playing outside.” ~ she says this as we are going to ChuckECheese this afternoon. Her answer could change then.

So, if you want to have a truly rewarding holiday with your 3 or 2 year olds, a few secrets discovered from our Christmas celebration this year were:  get them a Princess Castle, spend a little money but celebrate for 5 days, have plenty of holiday Mac and Cheese on hand (forget the cookies…they are unappreciated evidently) and have a favorite relative on hand so they can play outside. From the mouths of babes.. This is what it is all about!

I have to do a better job I guess! (Sigh)
