OUR LIFE IN 3D

The Home of Daddy's Day Dare! ~ I am just trying to stay above water

Ocean City ~ Another Trip to the Boards

So this past Winter we asked our girls where they would like to go for our summer vacation, Disney World or Ocean City, New Jersey they both answered without hesitation, “Ocean City, New Jersey!”

So here is another picture blog (sort of) of our trip this month, back to my favorite destination as a kid.

We left for OCNJ the week after school let out for summer. And while it was plenty hot where we live, 10 hours to our North they were still trying to unwrap summer. Actually, the kids were still in school at this time.

Day 1

Eat Breakfast at Browns Donuts.

We always rent bikes in OCNJ and take a trip down the boardwalk in the morning. Browns is conveniently located at the one end of the Boards, so we start our daily bike ride from there.

This is one of two places we visited once a day (at least) on vacation. They are soooo good!

We love Brown’s donuts!

We go to Texas Roadhouse about every other week where we live. Every time we go there the young hostess asks if we had been to Texas Roadhouse before?

We walked in Browns donuts and got a big hug from the staff, which we had not seen in close to two years.

Something you might not be surprised to see then in America’s Greatest Family Resort is the playing of the Star Spangled Banner at 9am every day on the boardwalk as they raise our flag on the Boards.

Yes 9am, not too early…..cause we are on vacation.

In Ocean City, NJ a seagull flies through the scene as they sing, “God bless the USA” at around the first minute into the video. Not and eagle or jets that you see other places  🙂

It is the coast after all.

So every morning bike ride one of the things we try to decide is ‘where are we going to play miniature golf today?’

The Ocean City boardwalk has no shortage of kid courses.

Mini golf with a view…rain or shine apparently

Our first day on the Boards we opted for Medieval Golf, a.k.a., ‘the place with the dragon‘.

Skye hiding from the dragon

Next in the OCNJ routine is back to the beach house, quaintly known as 4 Beach Road this year, conveniently located to Browns and a beach grill, to freshen up and head to the beach.

Now one of the heroines in this story, Dylan, is at an age where she does not like the beach so much; it’s too dirty.

But Skye loves it! So off we went!

We dug a warm tidal pool in front of the cold Atlantic

So working on the reputation of ‘the world’s greatest daddy’ (Fathers Day was right around the corner) I dug a wall around the out-flowing water of the retreating tides to create a warm pool for Skye to play in.

This was some work as you had to stay busy and a lot of fun!

Speaking of the beach grill, here is a shot from there where Mom and I enjoyed some local ‘Philly Cheese steaks, while Dylan and Aunt Sue practiced volley ball.

Take a look in front of us.

Parents, how many of you have kids that like to lay face and belly down in the sand and just get coated top to bottom?

Life’s a beach!

We showered up afterwards and headed over to the appropriately vacation themed ‘Island Grill Seafood House for dinner. This is another place we talked about all spring as we planned our vacation.

our Miss Drama on vacation

Then back to the boardwalk for the last two destinations we dreamed of all spring,

Amusement park rides on the Wonderland Amusement pier ….

…and Kohrs Brothers Frozen Custard!!!

Kohrs Bros. frozen custard accept no substitutes

This frozen soft custard ice cream goodness really can’t be over stated. And by the end of the week Dylan had her favorite Kohrs Brothers stand with her favorite staff.

Can you imagine any finer destination for a kid then, donuts, bikes, beach, putt-putt, amusement rides and soft ice cream all in one day?

And why this beats Disney World every time?

Day 2

Browns….

4 Cinnamon, 3 chocolate, 1 powdered and one vanilla…all Mine!!

Bike ride to decide on the  mini golf course to play.

Tuesday’s winner was the unforgettable favorite Seaport Village.

A household favorite, Jaws Golf

This has always been a family favorite after that unforgettable experience Skylar had years ago on her first encounter with putt-putt on the boards…and sharks!

Then it was back to the beach….

Yes a blonde life guard

…. then Castaway Cove Amusement Rides….

Fearless!

…and more Kohrs Bros.

Time for a daily dose of Kohrs Bros. Note the jackets

Notice the proper order…..

rides then ice cream and not the other way around.

Day 3

Browns donuts

Beware the paparazzi!

Boardwalk, bikes, mini golf…..

Today was the much awaited (and argued about), the legendary Congo Golf.

Congo Golf! The gorillas in the helicopter sing

Argued about you say?

Well trying to get two kids to agree on which course to play!

3 courses inside Congo golf (they all play Jimmy Buffett inside

Yes, dad took all the arguing in stride as they play Jimmy Buffett throughout the course..inside

Then back to the beach…

Today the post-card team of lifeguards actually came to life!

A family of swimmers drifted out past the breakers and could not make their way back to the shallows. A few of them waved for the lifeguards for Help.

I would like to insert a (blonde) joke here but I was really impressed.

Without hesitation, one of the lifeguards sprinted to the sea with an orange float under one arm, completely ignoring the 60 degree ocean temp.

In less than a minute two more life guards came literally sprinting down the beach full speed from the neighboring beach, floats in their hand, and dove into the ocean.

A minute later an all-terrain vehicle pulled up with two more lifeguards. And then another.

Life guards pulling swimmers from the ocean. I stood up as if I could be some assistance to the rescue

This rescue on this family of 5 was really impressive!

Adding to why this is such a great place to take your kids.

…speaking of,

later that day…

Rides

Did I mention Fearless?

…Kohrs Bros. ice cream, er, frozen custard

Chocolate and rainbow sprinkles

Day 4

Today on the Boards we tried a break in the routine,

a perk,

a decadent diversion….

Boards, Bikes, and Kohrs Custard…for breakfast

Soft Custard for breakfast!!

We still had our Browns donuts earlier on the bike ride.

(I put on so much weight this trip!)

Still no shortage of mini golf..

Pirate Island

Pirate Golf right down the boards from Congo

…that has the talking Parrott and Alligator…that tries to sell you DQ Blizzards

And the mandatory family pic….

mandatory family picture

more Beach..

This week in Ocean City they held the Miss New Jersey pageant at their famed Music Pier theater on the Boards.

This night they held the Miss New Jersey pageant ‘parade’ on the boardwalk so every one could get a glimpse at the contestants…

Miss New Jersey Parade

..ahhhh, the constants:

ahhh Ms. New Jersey parade

Each contestant rode in their favorite car and got made up to look like their favorite woman in history.

..then more rides

The Wonderland Bear says Hello to the two most avid riders

..as we were preparing to say good-bye to the Wonderland and Castaway Cove Amusement piers.

Summary:

So by now I guess you know our routine.

I didn’t take any pics of riding our bikes on the boardwalk. That, in itself, is a true highlight of a trip to OCNJ, for young and old a like.

We did not miss a single morning, rain or shine, hot or cold on the Boards with our bikes.

Here is a glimpse of what that is like..

Two and a half mile of beach homes, other bikers, joggers, and surreys.

Shops, sounds, smells and sights of vacation!

Candy, fudge, warm fresh caramel corn, ice cream, mini golf, souvenirs, beach stores.

A wake, up-stretch-your-legs, this-is going-to-be-a-great day, intro to vacation.

I stop, inhale, and marinate the ‘shangri la’ experience this is, and has been for me. Its good for the soul.

Shang ri la ~ the boards are good for the soul

Perfect morning on the boards

..cause I am pretty much still a kid at heart.

One mini golf place we did not mention or capture was the Haunted Golf with the skeleton out front that talks and sings to you.

No pictures cause it’s all inside.

Which can be a really cool thing in the summer; pardon the pun.

And that brings us to the sunset of our summer vacation.

The Sun going down to the west

Thanks for taking the time to look in and visit with us!

Sorry is it is so much of the same, past OCNJ posts. But each trip, I think this marks the 5th with the kids, is a new high with new experiences.

One more glimpse from the ferris wheel as we take the bridge across Egg Harbor and head home and  say good-bye.

It’s a great place to be a kid!

Want one more version of why Ocean City is Americas Greatest Family resort and the perfect place for kids? Listen to this unbiased version from a 10-year-old strolling down the boardwalk as he gives you a narrated tour of the Boards. Too cute!

This is the Ocean City experience… as seen through the eyes of a child.

My First Picture Blog

So today my oldest and I set out on a 600 mile journey on a family matter.

For the first hour of our trip her favorite subject was her favorite YouTubers, as she calls them. She follows them, is impressed with how many followers they have (so many more than moi), and tries to emulate them in her new YouTube site (she is creative and off to a good start).

She was telling me about her one favorite YouTuber and how she has a Video Blog on YouTube or V Blog for short.

Hmmmm….

It gave me an idea.

If she is impressed with these V Blogs maybe her old man could impress her by doing his own Picture Blog of our trip. I am not really set up for taking and editing a lot of videos but I can sure take some pictures I thought. Why not impress her with a P Blog of our trip?

So I hurriedly started taking some pictures of our trip for the P Blog and start a P Stream of the adventure.

Here is the first pic, as we sped up US 95.

As you can see we were all smiles…..

Next in the P Stream  was more fun and a little foolishness…

My next P came at lunch as we made a quick stop for some sustenance….

And trying to keep the P Stream going, she got me as I checked my teeth after lunch.

I tried to hold the P’s back a little as we approached DC. It is always tricky there and I needed to focus and keep both hands on the wheel.

We eventually made it to our destination some 4 hours later.

Exhausted, we picked my Mom up and took her to her favorite restaurant in her home town.

And so after we ordered I had time to take another overdue P for the blog…..

But I wasn’t done yet!

I took another P after dinner with my mother in the car….

Somewhat tired after dinner and the long 11 hour trip I did find the energy to take one more P in the car as I parked in front of our destination…..

You can see on my face how satisfying it felt; to get this long day and the P thing behind me.

So that is it!

Some of the highlights captured of our 11 hour car ride back to my hometown .

And….

My very first Picture Blog. It was actually fun (as you can see).

I think it came out OK.

What do you think?

I wanted to do one more shout out to a long time Follower/ Followee, Anna Lee West.

I often try to be funny in my blogs or write for effect. Anna IS funny!

Really funny I think.

And while her posts are getting fewer and fewer these days, like some of us, her latest post does show you that she hasn’t lost a stitch of her sense of humor.

So at the risk of losing even more followers (after this last post) I would like to invite you to check out  her latest post, I Am Not Fit For Calamity, as she struggles to keep it together during a power outage…in the middle of the day.

I hope everyone enjoys the best week.

Thanks for dropping by.

I will try to do better next time…

What Not to Say to a Cancer Survivor

I could write a blog post on my thoughts on Susie and her Wild Ride. She is the illustration and the definition of the word LIFE.

Yet the gods seemed to strike us both down with Cancer (the c word) about the same time. My readers often applauded my optimistic view on my journey with the c word, and how I even could joke about it.. Well, I took my cues from Susie (not to be confused with Susie Q). She was as serious as Purple Pansies.

My cancer, while serious enough, amounted to a Pop Quiz while Suzie had closer to a real full mid-term exam. (sorry, I just broke rule #3) We both are alive and well now, some 5 or so years later. And one of us is (still) traveling the globe and the other still wishes he was.

Live Life folks!

Make this day and every day awesome!

Thanks to Susie for educating us all about what to say and not to say as well as the life of a cancer patient and survivor….

susie lindau boob report picture with plants in front of her boobs before double mastectomies breast cancer

I’m almost five years cancer-free and have survived all kinds of off-hand comments. Everyone wants to say the right thing to a cancer survivor, but sometimes not saying anything would have been better. Some were well-intentioned while others seemed like heat-seeking missiles. When that would happen, I would go to a very dark place. A place filled with fear. A place without hope. A place I called The Hole. Dread and worry would swallow me. Sometimes for days. All because of some stupid remark.

It seems silly and yet there were times when I felt as if a giant C for Cancer appeared on my shirt. Some people avoided the topic altogether. Some avoided me like I was contagious. Others only wanted to talk about it.

Here’s the delio. Most survivors are cancer-free after surgery with or without chemo and/or radiation. We want to keep it that way. It’s funny…

What’s up?

I received an email from WordPress saying if I do not post something very soon they will consider 3D dead or abandoned

and shut me down since I have not posted in a while.

I told them I was busy.

~ actually my kids have just been hogging the computer….its been hard to get on.

They replied: see my WordPress contract, Article 19, section 5, paragraph 8, where it mentions the consequences of an existing blog without a pulse.

So here I am, (remember me?) with a few pictures so I don’t lose my 3D blog.

The last time I left you we were midway through birthday season.

Last month was youngest daughter’s birthday. She enjoys helping her mom in the kitchen so she decided to have a cooking birthday party.

Ever heard of that?

Her and her friends produce a three course meal, over two hours, that they get to make and then eat.

Yummy!!

First, was a really yummy and refreshing cranberry/grape fizzy drink.

Then they made their own pizzas, cutting up fresh vegetables.

And then they got to decide on what ingredients they wanted to put on their flat cookie-type cake.

Being some hungry creative youngsters you know it was delicious!

Her Skye-pie. it was AWEEEESOME!!

It was an innovative and different kind of b-day party and we think Skye had a lot of fun with her buds.

Along the lines of other blogs never gotten around to, I was considering doing another consumer advocate post on the company installed our solar panels (Vivant). But they stepped up and ended up making the situation right.

My gym also closed so I found a new one. But they altered the details of their contract within a week, which was making me want to do post on that outfit, if only to vent.

But they made it right too.

My oldest enjoys following me to the gym now

Another pretty girl getting buffed up for the summer.

Speaking of…. she just got her braces off after 14 months of restructuring her mouth and smile (and getting her to stop sucking her fingers). She was a bit apprehensive and nervous, not only about the routine but the outcome.

She did great and our movie star was all smiles when it was over.

This is her new smile.

She will probably need more braces in a few years after her molars come in.

Kids…don’t suck your fingers!

Birthday season wound up last night as we ‘acknowledged’ my birthday.

Some not-so-sexy underwear and PJs 🙂

I am no longer celebrating it. In fact, the thought of getting older brings a tear to my eye as I think of all the things I have not done yet.

So, going forward, I am going to start subtracting a year on the date of my birth.

…and see if that helps my shoulders and knees feel any younger.

Hey!!

The summer is right around the corner!!

 Are YOU ready?

Work on some tans? Fun in the sun? Trips to the beach and pool parties?

I will leave you with one of my summertime-dance-poolside-beachside favs as we raise a toast to SUMMER..

Have a great weekend everyone!!

Today’s Significance

Well, I guess you have all figured out what today is….

It did not escape our little spunky one (I have to conserve names here to protect the guilty).

Yes, its APRIL FOOL’S Day!!

So Miss Spunky decided she would prank us all.

This morning when we all woke up and raced downstairs to find what the Easter Bunny dropped. ~ oh wait, that didn’t sound so good.

Easter Breakfast

…to see what the Easter Bunny left the girls, it turns out the Easter Bunny left everyone in the house an Easter Basket (I didn’t know anything about this! ~ which is not uncommon) and unmistakably, laying on top of everyone’s Easter Basket, was a brand new $20 bill!

Thank you Easter Bunny!!!

Well a little giggle came from the direction of Miss Spunky. Then She cried,

April Fools!

Don’t you know what today is?

She got us good.

She said “pick it up….”

Here she took a $20 bill and copied both sides of the bill on our copy machine. Then she trimmed the bills to size and glued the front and the back together.

The fake Easter currency looked very real but felt thick and stiffer.

Hmmmmm?

Mom was quick to point out what she did was quite illegal and that she could get in a lot of trouble…

….and with people who spank harder than daddy.

We all had a good laugh and went back to looking at the Easter Bunny droppings.

In the back of my mind was a take on the Easter chant,

“She’s in prison.”

She’s in prison indeed.”

Happy Easter Everyone!

And thank you Easter Bunny!

our Easter Bunny

We made sure none of the funny Easter money made it to the offering plate later on that morning.

I guess I better go make sure that all bills are still accounted for.
