Back To School already? Our summer seems to have been eclipsed…

Well my friends, we have been singing a lot of this song below in the car this week, going  Back To School (que the music)

(sigh)

Yes Domino College…Back To School

C’est la vie!

Tell me, where did the summer go?

So with my girls going back to school on Thursday it had me thinking about,

“Did we do anything fun over the summer this year? it seems to have come and gone too fast.”

waiting for the bell to ring

I don’t know why they look so sad, I have to get up 45 minutes earlier everyday now! Geez!  🙂

Good bye summer vacation!

Well they were a little happier than they appear above. It looks like poor Skylar is dreaming about her time zip lining this summer..

While it looks like Dylan wishes she would rather be hiking and exploring new small streams…

Can you hear it?

She also did some hiking and camping that week.

That same week we did some white water rafting down the Nantahalla

After we took a train ride to the top of the Great Smokey Mountains

And that was after we saw some big old house…

that had gargoyles

and exotic palms

and fancy  trees

The girls also met some good friends at Bible School this summer.

And caught butterflies on their toes too.

Truth is we had a hard time keeping up with the girls this summer.

One day they were here and the next day they were gone…

But you know what?

Summer vacation isn’t quite over yet!

You see next Monday they tell us we are getting a Total Solar Eclipse in our town?

I mean, come on!!

Some people will think up ANYTHING to make some money in this town!!!

Yes a “once in a lifetime” “chance of a lifetime” TOTAL solar eclipse is rolling through our state next Monday. The hotels are packed from stem to stern.

And I hear they are all coming HERE to watch it!

Some 2 million visitors are expected this weekend.

The place will be packed!

Malls are advertising it on their marquees, to what, watch it in their parking lot?

Well that is all well and good.

Schools are closed. Banks are closed. Beaches are closed (sorry NJ)

And leave it to someone (or one hundred) to try to make some money off this event.

Yes there are Solar Eclipse parties,  specialty drinks, grocery store displays (Moon Pies and Blue Moon beer), t-shirts,

Specialty souvenir glasses (!!)

Why even a local semi-pro soccer stadium is having a band, kids and adult water slides and refreshments and

SELLING TICKETS TO IT!

Selling tickets to a natural occurring event that takes place up in the sky?

“Join us at MUSC Health Stadium for the best eclipse tailgate in the path of totality! We’ll have fun for the whole family including live streams of the eclipse as happens, astronomy related activities, kids zone, local food, full bar, live entertainment, and more! Tickets are $8 for adults.”

(le sigh) Anything to make a buck!  🙂

I guess if I were younger I would be thinking about partying there too.

But, yes, it’s a big deal in South Carolina. There are even those electronic message boards on our highways announcing it,

Total Solar Eclipse August 21st; Be prepared!

I guess that could be a real mess on the highways for our state police.

So what is going to happen?

Is the afternoon day going to turn dark? That is pretty neat I suppose.

I might just take the afternoon off too!

Want to join me?

While there are no hotels available in town (a fancy hotel just off of the prestigious Kiawah Island… that faces a grocery store is renting rooms for $600/nt this weekend) we DO still have one bedroom open at our house if you want to witness this event.

The standard fare for the room is dinner out and a case of beer.

Oh, and here’s one more piece of news for the event….

Its going to rain!

It seems to have rained here everyday since the 4th of July. Boy, that would, ahhh, darken everybody’s spirits.

I was planning on working that day. My team should have their jobs rolled up pretty tight by noon next Monday so they can get out of the traffic.

Know what, I might just pop a Blue Moon that afternoon too (while its dark). It is a special day after all. Come join me! Celebrate with 2 million of my closest friends.

I hope to capture what everyone else is doing during the solar eclipse and report back to you sometime next week.

Deal?

As for my girls, while their school did dispatch solar glasses at orientation, they have the day off.

Thats all they care about.

That suits them just fine!

As for you, come join us!

Sleep in our spare room or camp in our backyard. I predict there will be a party or two going on somewhere close that afternoon…

And watch, celebrate, photograph and blog about the day in its Totality as the day turned dark

(que the music)

Have a great weekend knuckle heads!

I will try to do a better job next time.

If there is one… 🙂

Wet! (Matthew Part II)

Can some one get me a towel?

So I was tweeting my friend. She was frustrated she had to leave her home to evacuate to higher ground when she tweeted:

hurricane-joke-9-485x60

Well I told her Matthew is going to ahhh, arrive around 7pm and promises to last all night and into tomorrow morning before he fades around breakfast time.

OK, No! I haven’t started drinking.

I am just getting loony from watching the Weather Channel.

Honest!

The rains did start here around 5pm and the Tropical Storm winds are supposed to start within the hour. The Weather Channel has changed their prediction to the worse, saying it will probably still be a Cat 3  storm when it gets to Charleston and there is a good chance it will touch land here instead of staying offshore like it did as it passed by Florida.

The hurricane bands are due to arrive closer to midnight and rock us (Get it? Rock us like a Hurricane?) all night long….till about 7am.

At least that is the latest forecast.

So Matt probably won’t disappoint my friend tonight after all.

So all we can do now is sit around and drink wait…

hurricane-party

Well it’s not a big party.

I rented a movie for the girls and they invited their 4 year old friend over to watch it later tonight.

What we are looking at, according to our local channel, and not the sensationalized news from the Weather Channel, is  (hopefully) Category  2 storm but maybe a Cat 3 as it heads to our town. It has a good chance of coming very close to our peninsula before moving north. We may get the inner, more powerful bands of the storm on the coast. Winds should be between 50- 75mph but looking for gusts of up to 100mph.

The bigger danger is that of water damage, with 6-8 foot storm surge on top of  full 8-12 inches (eat your heart out Ms. Paige) of rain; on top of an already filled area water basin. These local water basins and low-lying tributaries filled at the last high tide but the winds are preventing the water from running back to sea they say.

hurricane-creek

The local tidal creek (above) looks like high tide at 11am this morning but High Tide was still 7 hours away when I took this pic.

We are all buttoned up at our home. We brought everything inside that we could. We are just waiting for the show to start. And while we live about 800 yards from that tidal basin creek in the pic above (and 20 miles from the coat, I mean coast) I was doing some research last night on our home surviving a Storm Surge and we are good for up to 20fteet. So no worries there. Only all the roads out of our development will be underwater somewhere.

And now, here is our Local On The 8’s

(Wayyyy too much Weather Channel!)

I would like to give you an update tomorrow morning when we get up of what transpired over the night, maybe with some pictures, but we may be out of power Then. Pray to the power gods!

And as bad, or concerned as we get here I don’t want to forget about many others, thousands of others who have it worse than us, as I say prayers for those in Haiti and others where lives were lost.

Houses can be rebuilt.

Q: So what did Hurricane Mathew say to Hurricane Nicole?
A: I have my eye on you!
Stay tuned. Florida may do all this again next week.
Now back to the party!
I have been so bored I just discovered the new thing called Pintrest

Party Time!!!

Wait. Wait. Wait!  Put the 5 Hour Energy and the Monster Fuel away. This is not going to be an all-nighter (it better not) I was catching up on some reading and projects when my 4 year old came over and told me its “Party Time!”

This time she means business. She came over and cornered me with her posse, Ariel, Eric and King Triton. There was no getting out of this one!

I explained, “I still have some work to do”!

Dylan put on her sad heartbreak face, as she looked down to the floor with her somber look, barely showing her eyes from beneath her hair hanging down.

I said, “But I have nothing to wear!”

So Dylan pulls out her Dora costume for me; a red halter top and baggie genie pants.

I told her, “This will never fit me!” I tried on the red halter top (please don’t picture this!) And sure enough it was too small.

So Dylan ran to get her Tinker Bell outfit for me.

Sorry! Ain’t gonna be no stinkin’ fairy I thought. Feeling the peer pressure I thought I would humor her. Sure enough, it was not going to fit either. I tried!

“Well daddy why don’t to try dis on?” she says, handing me her pink tu-tu from last Valentines day.

Darn! She got me that time as it was a tie-string format. I reluctantly agreed. ~sorry no pictures of this!

Dylan gathered her friends put them in the lil’ shopping cart she got for Christmas and said, “Come on dad, its dis way to the party.” as she walked back the hallway.

I still had so much work to do I knew I didn’t dare ‘throw down’ like days of old. What to do? She had me. I drew a heavy sigh of relief as I saw where the party was going… back to Grandma’s room, a.k.a. her nap room.

So I told her of the great kinds of parties we had when I was a kid (when we still lived by candlelight). I told her they were the best parties, the most popular ones….Slumber parties! And I explained the concept to her.

I told her, her and her friends could sit around and talk about who they liked and who liked them. And when they wake up we would have pizza for everyone; it’ll only be 5:00pm, so no pancakes this time.

The party crew: Dylan, holding Ariel in her PJ’s, Eric, and King Triton

Seeing she’s buying into this I threw in how I would take some pictures ( I really needed some blog fodder) so that her and her friends could share and save the party forever. As my parents did, I warned her there was to be no talking after I turned out the lights and checked for any flashlights in the room; and cell phones, or games, lip gloss, small computers ~ its so cool to be a kid now a days!    She said, “OK”.

They slipped on their jammies and I put a finger to my mouth, saying “Hush, be quiet. I don’t want to come back here and see you girls talking after I leave.”

Dylan gave me a nod but then sprang up, as in another attempt to postpone the inevitable, and said, “I still hafta go potty!”

You girls better be sleeping back there!

I asked, ” who else in here needs to go potty?” But the room was silent.

She went. She did. She went back to the slumber party with out incident and I shut the door hoping to get some work done in the quiet. Another party under my belt (sigh) Just in time I thought. No more life in the fast lane for me

Wait. Hold on a second. Do I hear boys back there?

She never ceases to amaze me!
