OUR LIFE IN 3D

The Home of Daddy's Day Dare! ~ I am just trying to stay above water

Another afternoon in Charleston

Well its the month of January.

The tree is down.

The gifts stowed away.

The house is back to normal.

Whats next?

Last year we stumbled upon the local Museum Mile pass for our downtown, where, for a flat fee, you buy one ticket then get to visit all the museums and museum houses in our historic downtown.

Remember THIS last year?

We visited the Gibbes Museum of Art first this year.

Corene, 1955 By Jonathon Green

When you think of art, what do you think of?

Certainly there are numerous types of art.

Wiki says ART “is a diverse range of human activities in creating visual, auditory or performing artifacts, expressing the author’s imaginative, conceptual ideas, or technical skill intended to be appreciated for their beauty and power.

Phew!

I always understood ART as anything that makes you think.

To the Gibbes Museum of Art, they sum it up in their Manifesto:

“..the difference between merely existing and being truly alive.”

I think they copied that from my Ourlifein3d Manifesto!

When we entered the Museum we noticed most of the displays were the same as they were last year.

I hoped for newer!

But Art is what you make it and, as Museums go, we set out to learn new things.

First off were the ‘Sisters’.

I call this picture ‘Dylan and Skylar’.

As each of my two ‘sisters’ were humoring their old man and didn’t want to be there either, similar to the sisters in the painting who were being painted by their artist father.

Exhibit number two of what I learned…

Before the roughly 1920-1930 Little Boys were dressed like little Girls in our country and abroad.

In the picture below the caption read the child was the ‘lone son’ of this famous French Commander in our country.

Well the person behind D is dressed like a girl.

I learned in another museum today that around the age of 7 or 8 boys started wearing trousers. Then they were to be treated as an adult (to be seen in pants); not a child any longer.

The quote went on to say how adult women ‘were still treated with the same class as children and hence kept wearing dresses’.

Hmmmm…

Another interesting piece was this little metal carriage that was cut designed with a laser.

Notice the characters. What do you see or make you think of?

This piece was trying to depict a slave’s suffering in the early part of our country.

First, note in the second picture, a demon of sorts up in the tree reaching down to pull out the young dying slave’s heart.

Second, I want to apologize to everyone and especially the Southern Sea Muse. She is a great photographer and scraps her pics if the horizon in the picture is not level ( I read).

I take these pics with my phone. I try to level them off but not one of them you will see today will be level.

Sorry SSM!  I will never live up to your standards.

(She’s a bit of a Grammar Nazi too I understand)

The smaller third floor had new exhibits. The Noir floor….

‘A Dark Place Of Dreams

Here were several exhibits in black (the land of dreams) and how artists made shapes and things come alive. The various artists are in print under the title on the photo

The first thing that spoke to me were the huge sea shell displays. Real sea shells, they were mounted and painted black.

At first I thought it a bit eerie, but after looking at it for a while it did take on a dream like quality.

Or I was getting tired…..

See if you can blow it up or at least find the detail of all the types of sea shells (and Puffers) in these…

They are all real! (and not riding a Horizontal plane)

Now, keeping with this ‘black box’ theme was this:

Rock, Hard Place, 2012 by Kate Gilmore

..still leaning,

This type of art was not much to look at ….

You had to ‘watch it’!

Have you seen this type of art before?

I hadn’t.

and to speed you to the Big conclusion, this …

WTF?

The exhibit is called, Rock, Hard Place. And the young artist is just throwing rocks into small clay pots with paint in them.

My kids have been doing that since they were four!

Still, if you stood there, and watched the cascading waterfalls, steadily drop paint on the ground (you can see the artist is trying to keep from slipping) it can mesmerize you a little.

….or I was just tired.

The turn of the corner into the next room was a room full of trash.

..made to look like art.

The first artist illustrated was Chakaia Booker,

….’an American artist that is known for her environmental sculpture work that addresses the struggles and victories in human aspirations and involvement. Her work involves transforming found objects (old tires) into expressive art that tackles social and cultural issues as well as femininity.‘ (wikipedia)

I just saw something made with lots of carved scraps of old tires!

There was a lot of detail in the scraps of shaved old tires. They were still all rubber!

The exhibit reminded me of something a new blogger I follow would appreciate, Harleyte.

She is a one-of-a-kind young lady in France that rides motorcycles and kinda reminds me of a female James Dean…in France. She added her own unique touches to Christmas this year.

She’s cool like that.

I mean, James Dean would like this, right?

So If art makes you think…

What do you see in this next picture by Ms. Booker

Hedge Hogs, right?

No?

What did you see?

Well, If I told you what it was depicting you might think I was making it up. So here is the placard describing this piece of art by Chakaia:

Did you see that?

I did Not see that! Hmmm…well maybe…

So one final piece in this trash room.

It is called “OVER, the rainbow”.

Please take a look. I invite you in the comments below to tell me what you see or what you think the author is trying to say …

OVER, the rainbow

Yes, that is an exhibit with old rubber tires on the top flowing into empty gallon water jugs ( I must still have Chakaia’s last display in my mind), flowing into gallons water jugs cut in half, flowing into tin cans.

What does it mean?

Well, as a proud parent I have to tell you my very own Skylar got something she drew hung in the Gibbes Museum as well!

(we are soo proud of her!)

Skye drew that beautiful flower right there in the middle!

My artist in the making!

Get out of there Skylar!

But art is not restricted to a museum, oui?

As we left the Gibbes Museum right next door was the old Huguenots Building and with it its fine metal art work.

What do you think?

Huguenots were typically French Protestants who fled to this country to escape religious persecution. Although clearly, the green sign above the church door and the metal harp over the entrance suggest these people were from Ireland.

But wait, when in doubt, what does the sign say?

Use your context clues..

That would be a rough crowd!

Can you imagine that back in that day?

Catholics and Protestants meeting…… in a bar?

Hmmm?

It was a great day here in Charleston this weekend and across the street from the Gibbes Museum this pretty scene was going on.

They picked a

Great day!

Oh to be married in Charleston!

Things could be worse!

Thanks for reading on through all this knuckleheads!

I will try to do better next time!

Have the best week this week!

And give somebody a hug!

My Christmas P-Vlog

With Christmas becoming a blur and sliding into the rearview mirror I thought I would post some pictures of some of the memories and things my girls had fun with this Christmas season…

Christmas began with the trip to see the Christmas Lights at the Zoo

We all took in a Christmas Play downtown in the historic Dock Street Theater,

It was by our favorite 1st grader, and her name starts with J and that stands for none other

than Junie B. Jones herself!

The kids had a coupla skirmishes with LAnA, our Santa’s elf.

Here, she helped herself to the chocolate covered popcorn overnight.

And while I understand we are not supposed to touch her (or she flies back to the North Pole) I did take the liberty to reseal the popcorn to help with its freshness.

Well LAnA did not take too kindly to that !

(she tends to overreact sometimes)

And picked up the cheese knife let us know not to touch her things any more!

Well Christmas eve came.

The girls had parts in their church’s Christmas story performance.

Skylar played Mary…

our Skylar playing the part of Mary

Little D. played and an Angel..

Our Angel playing the part of an Angel (in her new dress)

Seriously, that’s what they cast her for.

And because of the numbers of youth in our church I was even cast (voluntold) as a Wiseman!

I thought that role may really require some acting on my part…

But, in the end,  I did not have a single line;

just gifts to give

and

the play went off without a hitch!

Mary, an Angel and a Wise Man…dressed like a King

And I was told I looked very Regal!

I looked like Yule Brenner!

But felt like the King of Somewear Hot…..

but thats another season altogether…

Christmas Eve came…

We got the kids all snuggled in bed and so Santa went to work…

He left the downstairs looking something like this that evening…

Two sacks of toys for good little girls and boys.

Santa’s view from the Chimney

Christmas morning looked like this…

Hatching their Hatchamals

Then they received some gifts from their Grandma, Aunts and Uncles…

These spoiled girls were begging for more gifts to open…

Note: the light out in the Train Station. It must have been shut down with the rest of the government that week. No more trains!

But truly, they had all they could handle!

This time of year is all about Love and Joy and honoring our Son.

And while Christmas’s may come and go, making memories will last forever!

Make some Memories everyone!

Take pictures.

Give someone a hug!

The season of giving and love.

Merry Christmas everyone!!

Christmas ~ what a Zoo!

Hello gang!

I promised myself, about a month ago, i would tell you about our trip to the Zoo.

You see, ever since I have belonged to this Zoo I have received emails every Christmas about their Christmas lights. The ads looked nice so I finally picked a day when I could run the girls up ( and 2 of their closest friends) to sight-see the Zoo and see how Christmasy the place can be.

Well, the day I picked….

It rained!

….but I was not going to let that dampen our fun!

But first we hung our wet socks (and sneakers) by the chimney with care.

In hopes that our pizza soon would be there….

Then it was off to the Zoo to check out some Christmas lights…

And some snake frights…

There were some big Boa’s and some small green Anacondas

Sea Lions swimming….

Maine Lobsters hiding

And mermaids posing….

~You can see how we were sticking to the inside exhibits~

There were tiny Koala Bears

And huge sleeping Grizzly Bears

These I wanted to be especially careful towards.

I can picture the fierceness of a Grizzly when woken up from his winter nap!

I did not want my rowdy kids running by here and waking these sleeping giants up!

Oh wait!

They did!

They did wake them up…

There was ol’ Huck Finn Grizzly, with the piece of straw hanging out of his mouth saying,

“Scratch my belly!”

Maybe he was not so fierce after all?

All the gorillas were in their cage and out of the cold rainy night.

This smaller gorilla was hiding something and getting fed by the Zoo staff….

Oh wait again!

She was holding her little baby!

She held it up once for all on lookers (both of us) to take a picture of, like any proud Mum would do.

But a rainy night it was .

Bearly (get it?) anyone was there.

But I was not going to let that spoil the umbrella of luxury and fun I provided for the girls.

So Santa provided….

an umbrella so they could stay dry(er)….

….while they caught marshmallows on fa-fa-fa-fire.

It was chilly!

But that did not stop my school of Christmas elves from making the most of it and having a great time!

Did somebody say, ‘PRESENTS?’

That’s it for now boys and girls.

I will try to do a better job next time!

Until then, please enjoy whats left of this fabulous time of year.

Stay warm.

Stay dry.

Stay Healthy!

And give somebody a hug.

And lets see what new changes this new year may bring!

Merry Christmas Week everyone!

Christmas Eve, 1965

CHRISTMAS EVE

This I would keep forever in my heart

Among the things that ruthless years may leave;

The glad excitement, wonder, and delight

Of Christmas Eve.

This I would hold untarnished through the years,

Although the roads I take may lead me far,

The radiant molten Joy of the light

From one white star.

And oh, to keep the breathlessness, the thrill,

My heart’s swift running out to meet Surprise,

Never to lose entirely the light

Of childhood from my eyes;

Never to lose the Christmas morning joy,

And never the quick bright eagerness to give-

God, someway let my spirit keep the shine

Of Christmas while I live.

Sometimes kids just don’t understand…

Forgive me, this is yet another reblog from a Christmas long ago (5 years 12/19/2013). From back when I still was creative and these darn kids didn’t wear me out so much.  And since lots of things are going on right now, let me introduce you to 3D of Christmas’s past….

Merry Christmas week everyone!

Hello Life in 2D! Yes I said 2D today. I am just feeling uninspired this week. You know, with the Big Day coming up. Things to do. Do we have enough time? Wrap all the gifts. Other than trips to the doctor I’m just not feeling so inspired this week. Just kinda tired.

I do my best thinking in the shower.

Seriously!

The down side to ‘brainstorming’ in the shower is that there is nothing to write with.  So I have to hurry up before I run out of hot water.

So this is what I came up with…

My 3 year old still wants to know why Santa didn’t bring her presents last night, since we have all these decorations up?

I try to show her the Advent calendar but she still doesn’t understand. So it had me thinking about some of the other things our kids don’t quite grasp about Christmas.

Here is a Top Ten List of things our kids just don’t understand about Christmas:

1.    Some of Santa’s elves just wrap toys better than others. It has nothing to do with skill or the amount of time left to wrap them.
2.    The being “Naughty” or “Nice” list does not begin two weeks before Christmas. Santa and Santa’s elves actually DO watch them all year long.
3.    You can’t play with just one toy before opening every package that Santa and your grandparents bring.
4.    The elves designed some toy packages to ‘ship safely’ and not packaged  to immediately play with. Dad just needs some breakfast Christmas morning before he commits to untangling the maze of wires and twists or ‘assembly’ in order to get to the toy; or else it could get broken Christmas morning.
5.    If a toy breaks Christmas morning Santa can not bring you a new one over night. A whole new ‘Naughty or Nice’ list begins Christmas morning.
6.    Santa can make it down the chimney. Sometimes he just needs to make several trips. There is no need to leave the door open this year; or a window open over night.
7.    Santa’s presents really DO have something to do with somebody’s birthday. Just not their birthday.
8.    The toys are not more important than the thought or the love behind them; even the sweaters or the books you did not ask for.
9.    Santa only makes the toys. He does not bring the batteries too.
10.    Mommy and Daddy really do want to take a nap after opening all the gifts that morning.

Dylan, you can't stick the ornament on the tree by 'pressing' on the treeNo Dylan. You cannot make an ornament stick on the tree by pressing on the tree

What are some other things your kids do not understand about Christmas?

Please feel free to offer them below. Maybe one of us has an explanation. And there is no such thing as exaggerating too much.

Go ahead…embellish!

Merry Christmas!
