The Story Behind Your Thin Mint Purchase

…OK I am new to the Girls Scouts.. so lots of this stuff is new to me.

No, I am not in Girl Scouts, silly person, Dylan is!

But every year those cute little Girl Scouts come to your door with smiles and batting their eyes in hopes of selling you some over priced Girl Scout cookies. They are a cultural icon I guess by now, right? When someone says the word ‘Thin Mint’ what do you think of?

Have you ever wondered what the Girl Scouts do with all that cookie plunder money?

Lets take a poll:

Without giving away the answer, here are a few pictures from last weekend at our local Girl Scout’s year-end party.

First off there was some food! A lot of it for a little Girl Scout troop…

GS Buffet

There was this buffet table, complete with 30 Papa John’s pizzas at the end of it.

There was the colorful and inviting Cup  Cake table

GS cupcakes There was also an equally colorful Candy Table  behind the buffet table filled with colorful gum balls, lollypops, Skittles, and Pixie sticks!

Are you kidding me?

Are you kidding me?

Maybe that is not enough sugar for our little princesses, er, brownies you wonder!

How about a Sno-Cone table?

GS sno cones

Now with all this sugar in their system these young ladies surely needed a way to burn it all off, right?

May I present Big Blue:

GS big blue

Now it wasn’t this Big Blue…..

..but is was more than enough to entertain Dylan for a while!

She seemed to enjoy it going down a few times…

GS slideIn fact, she got real good at going down the  slide, she went down so many times….

GS slide down

..in fact she spent most of the next 2 hours going down the slide…

GS sliding

Have another sno cone Dylan!

But it wasn’t ALL fun and games!

There was some business at this cookie-funded year-end party sugar-bash!

…and Dylan got to ‘Bridge into Brownies’

GS Bridging

Cool stuff!

She had a ‘Certified’ great time on my birthday weekend!

GS brownie

Oh my birthday weekend you ask?

It was nice!

No big deal!

Same ol’ same ol’

Have the best holiday weekend knuckleheads!

You all rock!

Thanks for looking in!

Can I interest you in another Thin Mint or Samoa?

Happy Birthday Dr. Geisel!

As some of you know, my girls have grown up loving the books and poems of Shel Silverstein. We have read these stories or poems to them every day in their beginnings. They are fun to read and fun to act out. And it seems every year, this time of year, there is school or two somewhere that does projects on these poems as this is the year I get my most Hits in Bedroom Stories for Shel’s work and specifically Snowball.

But arguably the most noted children’s author and poemster is Theodor Seuss Geisel, otherwise known as Dr Seuss.

And if you have a youngster in school you know he just celebrated a birthday last week.

Well all the First Graders at my daughter’s elementary school decided to celebrate and honor Dr. Theodor Seuss this week during a cleverly disguised PTA meeting. Yes, those PTA’ers had the First Graders come in and honor Dr. Seuss during a volunteer meeting. ( Bamboozled I was)dr.

So we attended this Dr. Seuss show and a big pack of First Graders. The show was great!

They were truly treated as Rock Stars with all the paparazzi going on…

Each class took turns reading several verses from Dr. Seuss’s most popular poems. Dylan was chosen from her class to do a reading with her best friend.

I think all you parents know what I mean when you can really feel for your young child as they get set to read in front of all their peers, and a big auditorium… behind a microphone.

You know what? She did great! She wasn’t the loudest but reading her rhymes she didn’t miss a word.

How did I do Daddy?

How did I do Daddy?

At the end we were all treated to a serving of Green Eggs and Ham.

Remember this one?

Try singing reading along with these enthusiastic kids from Thursday’s hoopla…

…..You do not like green eggs and ham?

I do not like them, Sam-I-am.

Could you, would you, with a goat?

I would not, could not. with a goat!

Would you, could you, on a boat?

I could not, would not, on a boat.

I will not, will not, with a goat.

I will not eat them in the rain.

I will not eat them on a train.

Not in the dark!

Not in a tree!

Not in a car!

You let me be!

I do not like them in a box.

I do not like them with a fox.

I will not eat them in a house.

I do not like them with a mouse.

I do not like them here or there.

I do not like them ANYWHERE!

I do not like green eggs and ham!

I do not like them, Sam-I-am.

Great job everyone!

And Happy Birthday (belated) Dr. Seuss!

How’s your Monday going so far?

If it’s not a Happy Monday come on along for a ride in 3D

That’s right, we listed our house on Monday online. We had 3 showings in 3 days. And the 2nd visitor opted to buy in! We closed the deal on Friday. Friday! Five days! It was so exciting. We actually counteroffered via texts. Is this the way it is done now?

I asked some others in the real estate business if our asking price was possibly too low? Almost unanimously they all said, “no it was offered just right.” Thanks Anna!

I think you all remember the hurdles and hoops we had to jump through to get to this point. And then it sold just like that.

I think everyone should meet our All-Star Realtor.

If Realtors had a board she would Chief. If they honored their own she would be in their Hall Of Fame. If they had a league she would be an All-American. If Realtors were a pizza she would be Supreme. If they were ice cream she would be Catfish with brown gravy! Lol Sorry Anna. I had to put that in there.

I found Anna through a friend of mine from grad school. He’s in the mortgage business so I asked him when we started this house hunting journey if he could recommend anyone. Anna is who he suggested.

Anna had a reputation, if not legend, of selling a house in 7 days in the development she now resides in. My mortgage broker knew of this. My recent contractor and painter of our abode heard of her name this way and of her 7day selling feat. Know what? I think she just topped her own record. If you need to sell your house fast you can find her here at CarolinaOne Reality

So hats off to Anna and many, many thanks! Only problem is we have to be out of our house by the end of April now. But that’s a good problem to have I think.

Happy Monday? We are absolutely giddy her in 3D land. Birthdays start this week.

They began with a special, huge gift box in the mail from one of our, now famous, grandmothers and daughter. This box was so big it would have a hard time fitting in the back seat of my car. Once opened it was literally packed, layer after layer of great. Great (not allowed to use the word ‘awesome’ any more) birthday gifts and Easter gifts for both our girls. Videos will be offered as soon as they are processed buy here is a look at the fun things inside.

Dylan asked if I could blow these ballons up right now?

But unwrapping this gift treasury was just the start.

Our girls got a visit from some long-lost cousins (and their family) of theirs. Long lost cousins you ask? Here is the last picture of our girl(s) with their one cousin. Dylan was 4 months old! It was from their mom’s and my brother’s wedding, almost 5 years ago.

John's Wedding 023[1]

One of the girls was in town visiting a college for next year.

Some might notice an age difference? But not these great girls. They played and laughed and danced (the girls are trained dancers) Two nights in a row all 4 girls ran upstairs and played and jumped and laughed until something got broken.

The girls came down stairs then and gave our girls some more b-day gifts. We threatened them enough to sit still for some quick family pics until the next 4 year reunion. Ok we will see them this summer.

They taught my cherubs the fishy-fishy face.

Here is their “Fat Duck face’

“Fat, fat ducks never, never smile….

But we do!”

Fat-Duck Faces don't smile

Here they did something terrible to Skylar….

They told Skylar she had to stand on one foot...

It was tons of fun having them and their parents in town. We all had a great time…once we were all healthy. And are really looking forward to the next fishy-face faceoff.

Thanks for all the great toys Marty, Jordyn, Sara and John! Happy Monday!

The birthday’s actually start today. Happy Monday! If you have a chance come on by and have some fun.

PS…We sold our house!

How a Pirate Feels at 50

I am hitting the big Five-Oh today. I have mixed emotions about it. Can you believe it? Half a century! It sounds so old. I’m not that old! Am I? What should I do? How should I feel? Its just a day? It feels like a day of self-assessment.

It makes me think of all the things I’ve done and gotten accomplished. And all the things I haven’t accomplished. And those things I should have accomplished. If you are younger, take note. I don’t want to sound too grim but…. time is running out! (lol) Well that’s kinda the way I feel.

To add salt to my wounds this week I heard a snippet on NPR (there we go again) about Ford’s pension plan and how they don’t have enough to pay all their employees and they are asking their employees to take a lump sum payout instead taking their annual receipts. And one guy is interviewed and he say’s “I don’t know. It’s a gamble. Do I take it all now or wait until later…..”I MAY NOT LIVE THAT LONG”!

~Thanks NPR.

Deepening the mortality wound a bit deeper this week was my AARP card arriving in the mail 😦  I didn’t ask for this!

On the way home yesterday I heard this old favorite song and it kinda summed up my somber mood. I hope you don’t mind. I think the song talks about ‘what’s left to do’. It talks about dreams ahead and old pirate days of the past; things I did, things I did and can’t do anymore and things still left to do. It the big Five-Oh. Here it is, with some embellishments…

Mother, mother ocean, I have heard you call
Wanted to sail upon your waters since I was three feet tall
You’ve seen it all, you’ve seen it all

Watched the men who rode you switch from sails to steam
And in your belly you hold the treasures few have ever seen
Most of ’em dreams, most of ’em dreams

Yes, I am a Pirate

Yes I am a pirate, two hundred years too late
My The cannons don’t thunder, there’s nothin’ to plunder
I’m an over-forty fifty victim of fate
Arriving too late, arriving too late

I’ve done a bit of smugglin‘ snugglin’, I’ve run my share of grass
I made enough money to buy Miami, but I pissed it away so fast
Never meant to last, never meant to last

And I have been drunk now for over two weeks
I passed out and I rallied and I sprung a few leaks
But I got stop wishin’, got to go fishin’
Down to rock bottom again
With just a few friends, just a you WordPress friends

(figuratively my Forties)

I go went for younger women, lived with several awhile
Though I ran ’em away, they’d come back one day
And still could manage to smile
Just takes a while, just takes a while

Mother, mother ocean, after all the years I’ve found
My occupational hazard being my occupation’s just not around
I feel like I’ve drowned, but I won’t wear a frown.

My “Weekend At Bernies” pose

Well it appears I need a new set of goals. No more “buying Miami’s”. I need to get a tad more conservative in choices in my 401K. Try to further enhance any legacy plans previously sown. And try to touch my toes every morning when these old bones get out of bed! And maybe, this year, I can finally decide what I want to be when I grow up….besides the World’s Coolest Dad!

I have many things to be thankful for so far. This blog illustrates just a few of them. Its just another day.

Jimmy Buffett can perform this song a whole lot nicer than it reads.  Check it out….
